My friend has a water colour by Edouard Detaille 1876 with the title
Lieutenant Du Geni, but although Google shows lots on the artist I
cannot find a helpful reference to the subject.

Maybe the term Lieutenant Du Geni is misleading. Can anyone help
please?

Thanks,
Emrys Davies.

The right spelling is probably "Lieutenant du génie".

I am not sure this will help you ; you should have a look on the
following sites :
http://wwwcano.lagravure.com/Detaille.htm
http://wwwcano.lagravure.com/Militaires.htm

You will see numerous prints, made in 1890 from original watercolors of
Detaille.

Be careful : it seems that the prints still have the date of the
original work and have been manually colored with watercolors.
(in the French site : "Technique : photogravures imprimées en teinte et
rehaussées à l'aquarelle, à l'époque.")

My friend has learnt from Bonhams, the Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers,
that what he thought was a water colour is in fact an engraving worth
about £20.00 so he has quickly come down to earth.

Thank a lot for your interest and help.
