We all know that art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize the
truth. ~Pablo Picasso

I don't paint things. I only paint the difference between things. ~Henri
Matisse

Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do.
~Edgar Degas

It is a mistake for a sculptor or a painter to speak or write very often
about his job. It releases tension needed for his work. ~Henry Moore

Pictures must not be too picturesque. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist
does the better. ~André Gide

But that's what being an artist is - feeling crummy before everyone else
feels crummy. ~The New Yorker

Art consists of limitation. The most beautiful part of every picture is the
frame. ~G.K. Chesterton

Let me ask you something, what is not art? ~Author Unknown

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any
other way - things I had no words for. ~Georgia O'Keeffe (Somebody should
have given her a thesaurus!)

The world today doesn't make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?
~Pablo Picasso

If Michelangelo had been straight, the Sistine Chapel would have been
wallpapered. ~Robin Tyler

All great art comes from a sense of outrage. ~Glenn Close

An artist's career always begins tomorrow. ~James McNeill Whistler

An artist never really finishes his work; he merely abandons it. ~Paul
Valéry

An artist cannot talk about his art any more than a plant can discuss
horticulture. ~Jean Cocteau, Newsweek, 16 May 1955

Funny, I think I said something similar to you -- art, by its very nature, is
fake. It is ARTificial. A painting doesn't create shadow, it approximates
it. Art is not a THING, but represents a THING. To restate the Picasso
quote -- art is a lie that points to the truth.

These quotes you call stupid are all very impressive and I like them a lot.
That they cause you to have an emotional response (enough to say you hate
them) would indicate to me that on some level you understand them, but
dislike your understanding.

I get this feeling you're very much afraid to lose control.

To put this in terms you might understand better, when you first start to
learn to play the guitar, you must be aware of everything you're doing.
Where the hands go, what strings to pluck, where to press your fingertips.
After much learning of technique, play becomes more instinctual. It becomes
intuitive.

At that point, it no longer feels like you're playing the guitar. The effort
you have to make is minimal. It feels like the music is coming out of the
world, and you just happen to be the portal it comes out of.

> Let me ask you something, what is not art? ~Author Unknown

I say something similar to this all the time. Everything is art.

> I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any

Language can't say some things effectively. There are feelings that are
expressed better in other ways. This is why we have dance, music, painting,
and every other art form. Why write an essay expressing joy, if you can
DANCE it out in a much more powerful way?

> The world today doesn't make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do?

> Pablo Picasso

If you hate this quote, you must hate the dadaists.

> An artist never really finishes his work; he merely abandons it. ~Paul
> Valéry

It's another way of saying that no painting is ever perfect. We have to, at
some point, recognize that the piece is as good as it's going to get, and
then move on to a new project.

> An artist cannot talk about his art any more than a plant can discuss
> horticulture. ~Jean Cocteau, Newsweek, 16 May 1955

I particularly like this quote. It describes that feeling I have that no
words can express precisely what happens when I go to make a painting, or
write a story, or do something creative. I don't understand the entire
process going on.

Art is a living process, and it's impossible to summarize life.

(1) Skip the session. (2) Sue your university. (3) Analyze why you glorify
child molestors as art.

You just made me laugh out loud. It scared my dog.

The enemies are in your head. Finding someone "out there" to fight with
might make you feel better, for a while. But the enemies in your head will
still be there.

You can't convince yourself you're right by insisting everyone else is wrong.
Inner strength isn't found that way. We are all made by our culture, our
world. If you prove all of us are shit, then I'm afraid you are too.

Please paint me a picture, if you have the time.

Fortunately, I have enough sense to separate myself from your shit. Your
persistent use of "WE" means nothing to those of us with independent minds.

What a shame...

Schools are expensive.
