The nineteenth century dislike of realism
is the rage of Caliban
seeing his own face in a glass.

tHE 21ST century disinterest in realist painting comes from the too
often photo realism that doesn't really add much to the subject
matter, i.e. artist's emotions, model's emotion's. It's more than that
even, it's the idea that when the picture is perfectly focused and
crystal clear (many photo realist paintings) there is no mystery left,
and one can stare at the painting and praise it's artistic merit and
skillful style but I'd like a little artistic vision. I like to see
that artistic license getting a work out. It's like the musical
parallel I've made before: some well trained musicians can spew
hundreds of notes in technical perfection and be less moving than one
properly placed note wrapped in silence.

When I see comments like that I have to
ask, how many ACTUAL photo-realist paintings
have you seen? Not reproductions - those
become no better than photographs. How many
of the actual PAINTINGS have you seen?
