My heros are Michelangelo and Renoir.

Are there any modern painting instruction books, where the example
paintings by the author resemble Michelangelo's or Renoir's paintings?

there is a series of books available in the U.K. called The History
& Technique of Great Masters which you might find helpful. There is
one on renoir but not Michelangelo.
