I'm attempting to preserve drawings on Kraft and black
construction paper using a variety of substances, such
as Cretacolor pencils, Pitt's oil base, etc. -- not much
graphite or charcoal.
Maybe. I don't think so, but it is the cheapest premade no fuss thing
you could use.
Can't really say because most people don't use it except in dire
emergency.
Yes it is.
Pretty much any alcohol based hairspray will work. Avoid the good for
you hair types.
What kind of Cretacolor pencils? I am fond of their monoliths, and
hairspray would be fine on graphite, but they make a lot of different
kinds.
One of the selling points of the Pitt oil pencils is they don't
require a fixatif. If you really really want to use a fixatif over
them, you would be best off trying a test sheet first. Solvents tend
to react oddly with oils and waxes, and water based things often bead
up on them.

Many thanks for your answer and for those who
answered by email as well.
I use the Cretacolor monoliths and a lot of other
stuff as well. I have a large pile of pencils and just
snatch up whatever the spirits direct me to. This is
when I'm doing life drawing, where the poses are
often not very long and leave little time for
meditation. In any case the spirits seem
heedless of the pencils' composition. Or
maybe not. Anyway, I have to send one of my
drawings to Taiwan, which is a long way, and I
thought maybe I should set its hair a bit before
bidding it bon voyage.
