non-profit charitable organization established in 2002 to promote

Painting en plein air originated in 19th century France when the
invention of the collapsible painting tube made it possible for
artists to head into nature. Degas, Renoir and Monet made sketches
outdoors, producing more finished works back in the studio. Today,
there are more than 500 registered plein air artists in the United
States who paint in the open air ? capturing landscapes and
slice-of-life vignettes.
