I'll put my hands up, no argument - I initially hoped it wouldn't happen,
but in the absence of daleks I suppose you need some kind of link to the
past to ease people into the new version of the show. As I think we've
discussed before, it all depends on what the writers *do* with the old
monsters: hopefully something that exploits their good points and renovates
any weaknesses that were inherent in their first appearances.

Well I gotta say, I'm feeling quite positive about it. It seems to be moving
in the right direction - we have a ninth Doctor, not a rebooted series
trying to start from scratch. We hopefully won't be bogged down with
continuity, but maybe it won't be totally ejected. We've got 2 eminently
capable actors in the lead roles. Just a shame we didn't get to see more of
Paul McGann on the screen, and there won't be an official regeneration
hand-over.
Now just as long as RTD doesn't use it as a platform for any sexual
moralising... It's a shame it's been shoehorned into your typical 45 minute
sci-fi show format. But at least there will be a few multi-part stories. It
seems to be popular in shows such as Star Trek to explore characters. OK I
suppose, as long as it's not at the expense of a decent plot and a bit of
action! I'm looking forward to seeing the new stories, although I'm a little
wary of Paul Cornell - he's a bit unpredictable and Scream of the Shalka
lacked a certain cohesion.
Interesting though that RTD, as the show's main writer, seems to have
stepped into JNT's shoes...

Well I guess I was in the 'no old monsters' camp, if that's how you
want to put it. I admit to being surprised, but it doesn't bother me.
I'm treating the news like I have every other piece of news about the
series. I have great faith in RTD, he knows exactly what he's doing,
and I think that whatever he decides to do it's going to be great!
I'm not entirely sure why you're being so smug and crowing about it
though, I wasn't aware there was some sort of competition going on :o)

Because we got so much of a kicking from those who wanted no
references to the past. Not you, but some were very vicious about it,
and in their put-downs. Almost calling us half-wits or nostalgia
freaks.
We didn't want a deluge of old stuff - just a few nods. I think
everyone will be happy (bar those who enjoy being miserable - and
they'll be glad too in a way!).

Fair point. There does seem to be an attitude from some of the more
'radical' fans that anybody who wants even the briefest mention of the
past is a rabid fanboy and should grow up. An attitude which is more
prevelant in book discussions I've noticed, which sometimes seem to go
a bit like this:
Fan 1: This amnesia is rubbish, and what exactly *did* happen to
Gallifrey?
Fan 2: I suppose you want every book to be like Warmonger. Get back
to your Pertwee videos.

Obviously this is load of nonsense. If you want my advice, anybody
who comes out with anything like that can be safely told to piss right
off.
As for the new series, I'm surprised but happy to be proven wrong
about old monsters, I'm a sucker for gratuitous continuity references
as much as anybody. However, I'm sticking to my guns about Paul
McGann. There is no way we will see him in this series, and the idea
that we might get a flashback regeneration in the second or third
season seems like the product of a fevered mind! If I'm wrong, you
can remind me and I'll eat all your hats.

I totally agree with the first bit, however for me the 'elements that
make Doctor Who' are as follows:
The Doctor
The TARDIS
An adventure.
That's it. I'd even be prepared to let the TARDIS go at a (big) push.
For example, Talons of Weng Chiang, Pyramids of Mars, Caves of
Androzani. None of those stories contain old monsters, do you class
them as not proper Doctor Who?
Doctor Who isn't about a checklist of monsters, surely.
