The advertisers have taught him how to think, the only thing
standing between him and getting what the advertisers tell

Unfortunately, I need my heart for a few more years yet. So
you'll have to find something else for the spot on the
mantle for a few years.

Ostritch feather duster is supposed to be the best
available. And it has to be real ostrich feathers.

But if you can't find a decent ostrich feather duster, a
lamb's wool duster makes a reasonable substitute.

Eh.

He didn't want the shirt until he saw it in the store. I don't know
how I can prevent him from wanting things he sees in the store, except
to never take him to the store.

Since we were at the store shopping for clothes for him, that's not
really practical.

Well, the solution is pretty straight forward, if hard to
implement. You just don't take him to stores (or
departments) that sell stuff he likes. And it can't be done
in a blatantly obvious fashion, like taking him into the
women's clothing department in a store like Bloomingdales,
either.

Well, now that depends on what theory you're going by. I can handle

I guess it's too late to train him to accept lower
standards--at least until he is old enough that the more
expensive stuff will fit for more than six months.

Yes, the probability that a message's content relates to the
subject approaches zero as the number of posts in the thread
goes to infinity, with the greatest drop in probability
occurring within the first five to six posts. Essentially .
Easily modelled by a mathematical function along the lines
of

f(x) = 1 / e^ax

where a is large.

The fact that there is some probability that a thread after
the first one could relate to the subject and the fact a
probability has to be between 0 and 1 inclusive are the only
reasons we can't model the probability with something a bit
more exotic like a delta function.

f(x) = infinity for x = 0

f(x) = 0 for x ^= 0

LOL

You make it sound like someone forced you to take math at
gunpoint. ;)

At diploma-point is actually accurate.

No math, no graduate. It's coercion rather than physical violence,
but it wasn't of my own free will.

Technically it could be seen as either way.

On the one hand, it was forced because, if you didn't have
those courses, they would wouldn't give you the diplima.

On the other hand, it was voluntary because you did chose
that particular program of study. If you really didn't want
to take those math courses, you could have enrolled in a
different program that didn't require them.

While this is a cursory examination, it looks like you could
get this degree without taking any math courses. I suspect
that universities other than the U of A that offer a similar
program probably have similar requirements.

BA Anthropology Honors

Honors in Anthropology

The BA with Honors provides broad training in
Anthropology and an opportunity to undertake
independent work.

Honors in Anthropology requires a minimum of *48 and a
maximum of *60 in Anthropology (at the junior and
senior level). which must include ANTHR 206, 207, 208,
and 209; one of ANTHR 415, 416, 481, or 498; the Honors
Seminar (ANTHR 400); and the Honors paper (ANTHR 450).

A minimum of *12 must be at the 400-level. Students are
encouraged to take *3 in each of the four
anthropological subdisciplines at the 300- or
400-level. The Honors Anthropology program does not
have a minor requirement.

Promotion Requirements - Promotion from year to year
requires a GPA of at least 3.0 with an average of at
least 3.3 in Anthropology courses.

Graduation Requirements - Graduation with Honors in
Anthropology requires a graduation average of at least
3.0 with an average of at least 3.3 in Anthropology
courses. Graduation with First Class Honors requires a
minimum GPA of 3.7 in Anthropology courses beyond the
junior level and 3.5 or better on all courses in the
final year (last *30).

Ah yes, but...

It specifies that you must also complete the liberal arts stuff -
that's how they sucked me into the math before. All of my colleges
required it of ALL graduates.

I would have thunk it was the science requirement that would
snag you. Liberal arts tends to be things like English,
classics, second languages, philosophy . . ..

The science thing is a detail in how you gotta complete the liberal
arts stuff. It requires a basic well rounded knowledge, to include a
certain amount of math. Stupid math.

At least you are well rounded. :)

Anyway, I'm guessing given your psychology background,
you've probably been exposed to some statistics.

They understand - they have to, because nobody could so reliably
distort the data to support their own points on accident.

LOL

I can still remember someone telling me about the MLA who
was concerned that half the students scored below average on
exams and wanted to know what could be done to improve this.

Actually, I suppose you could do it with a non symetrical
distribution about the mean where the mean is below the
median. However, I'm sure a policy aimed at deliberately
failing a small percentage of the population would go over
like a rock.

Anyway, my understanding is human populations are pretty
symetrical around the mean when it comes to qualities like
intelligence, and so there really is nothing that can be
done to ensure more students score above average on exams.

It's called taking reasonable precautions.

After all, while I don't get the impression you are anywhere
close to queen size, your saying you're "all sorts of well
rounded" could invite a description of pleasantly plump.

Anyway, if the picture of that top you picked out some time
back is any indication, I'm guessing your shape is pretty
typical.

Maybe not petite, but definitely not grossly overweight.

(You may now give me a whack on the side of the head.)

LOL.

There's just no winning, is there?

If I am bold I get whacked on the side of the head.

If I am timid I get whacked on the side of the head.

I bet if I'm in between I get whacked on the side of the
head too.

AIUI, the scheme of "grading on the curve" has that effect, and it's
accepted behavior in some contexts.

You can raise the average. But that isn't going to change
the fact that half the students will have marks above the
average and half will have marks below the average.

I thnk the MLA's intent was to get more students above the
average and fewer students below the average, and as you
suggest, that is simply chasing your tail.

Women come in all shapes and sizes.

While maybe a bit of a simplification, you get regular
sizes, you get plus sizes, you get petite sizes, you get
petite plus sizes, . . ..

Some are tall. Some are short.

Some are slim. Some are fat.

Most are somewhere in between.

More likely he was talking about an average that was not set by the
students in question, a national average or a regional one, and his
quote got taken out of context to use against him.

That's my experience with most incredibly stupid things people say -
they weren't all that stupid IN context.

You tend to use language at times that is suggestive of the BDSM
crowd. Anyone can occasionally send a signal phrase or word that they
don't know as such. But the frequency with which you go there is
occasionally confusing to bystanders.

You may be right.

Then again, here are a few from former Canadian PM Jean
Chretien -

"I don't know. A proof is a proof. What kind of a
proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof, and when you
have a good proof, it's because it's proven."

"I don't know. What happened? If you don't know, The
cameras were there. Some people came in my way, it
might have been... I had to go, so if you are in my
way, I am walking. So I don't know what happened.
Something happened to somebody who should not have been
there." [After grabbing a demonstrator by the neck.]

Taken in or out of context, politicians as a group do tend
to say some of the craziest things.

I did some reading on the BDSM subculture at one point, so I
probably know a bit more about it than the average bear. But
compared with an actual practitioner, I'm really a babe in
the woods.

Oh, of course. But without having someone there who's into the

Ah yes, safe, sane and consensual. If it's not consensual,
it's assault.

And then Snarky's sig is so long that my usual tactic of "slide

You're right, if you aren't enjoying yourself, there is
something wrong.

The whole reason for entering into a BDSM relationship is
for all parties to benefit. (I was going to say both, but
in BDSM you don't have to limit yourself to a twosome if
everybody agrees more is OK.)

It's less the expertise that is at issue than actual interest.

Anyone can learn, if they want to. But enjoying... that's not really
learned.

You're right, threesomes (or moresomes?) aren't limited to
BDSM.

When I originally wrote my paragraph, I was originally going
to say both. But then I though, "No, that doesn't sound
right." So that is the context in which I made my
statement.

And this is creating confusing you. (I take your comment
about being occasionally confusing to bystandders as being a
proxy statement for it being confusing to you.)

Much as the drill sergeant might say, "you will do pushups
untill you enjoy doing pushups". :)

If you really don't like doing pushups, doing more isn't
necessarily going to change that.
