The team of Pertwee, Manning, and Delgado work well together on
screen. Delgado proving he was easily the definitive Master. Simm,
Roberts, and Ainley pale beside him.
Very nice long tribute to Delgado on the bonus disc, with clips of
other shows he appeared in.
This was such a great period for Doctor Who. Pertwee is fantastic,
playing the role totally straight and with the authority that
Troughton lacked.
I agree with almost everything you say there...it`s a fun story and the
Delgado documentary is superb. However Troughton is my second favourite
Doctor after Tom so I`ll have to agree to disagree with you there.
Oi! To each there own RE: Troughton / Pertwee.

I remember this period with fondness, though I felt the Master was
over-used. That said, Delgado certainly was the definitive Master
(though if Jacobi had continued in the role he may have challenged him).
I can't agree with you on Troughton, though. For me his portrayal of
the Doctor gave the character a depth and range and a vulnerability
that has never since been touched.
Statement. Of the obvious. Noted.
Thank you john Sybil smith.
Just like your God, eh? ;-)
Don't thank me - and don't keep stating the obvious. The point is: it's

>And NOW you are PLONKED!<
Yes he was really playing it "straight" when he was dressing up in
women's cloths or totally serious when he was singing in the shower or
coming up with that ridiculous Venusian Akido or whatever the fuck it
was?
Pertwee was IMHO without doubt one of the worst Doctors, give me
Troughton, Tom Baker or even Colin Baker any time.
Pertwee offered humour and a sense of justice at the same time.
As I said to each their own.
You can pick faults with any of the Doctors if you want to:
* Hartnell - irascible and unlikable when the mood suited
* Troughton - Silly at times
* Pertwee - overbearing and condescending too often
* Baker T - to me the less said about Season 17 the better
* Davison - a good actor (and my favourite Doctor) but didn't he
moan a lot
* Baker C - the outfit, the outfit, the outfit
* McCoy - That bloody jumper (and IMHO his lacking in authority)
* McGann - half human - what a pile of wank
* Eccleston - too good for the programme now is he?
* Tennant - "I'm so sorry/What!"
* Smith - too young
However, on the flip side:
* Hartnell - solid, authortarian, believable
* Troughton - Whimsically clever and funny
* Pertwee - steeped in authority, had fun and tried to make sure
those watching it did as well
* Baker T - Olympian Detatchment - the perfect role model for those
looking to follow this style
* Davison - not Tom Baker being silly, easy to empathise with
* Baker C - good in Big Finish :-)
* McCoy - tumbleweed rushes past, a bell tolls in the distance
* McGann - half human - what an innovation, loved the bit with the
poliecman's gun
* Eccleston - A brilliant gurner
* Tennant - proof that amphetamines are not all bad
* Smith - acts like an old man in a young mans body brilliantly,
even better than Doc no 5
One person's nectar is another person's poison I suppose

Thank you for echoing to each their own sentiment I have.
According to the documentary, Delgado felt he was over-used too. He
wasn't being offered other roles because producers considered him a
regular on Dr Who.

I haven't seen that story for years. Yes, I'm sure some Pertwee scenes
were silly, but IMHO Frontier was a good story. (Apart from the rushed
ending and Delgado's final scene being so anticlimatic.)

Did you have /Doctor Who and the Space War/ to keep the memories
alive? As usual with Malcolm Hulke's books, it added a lot of depth to
the characters and explained their motivations rather more clearly
than the TV version.
> Forgotten it featured such a variety of characters, -

The Draconians were wonderful, and the Master's comical relationship
with the Ogrons is surpassed only by his relationship with Trenchard
in The Sea Devils.

Jo was certainly much less annoying than usual in this one. It might

As you implied above, the reason he was so good is that he fitted so
well into the "team".

That woulkd be a big incentive for me to buy the disc, if only it
weren't paired with an insufferably dull Daleks-By-Numbers story.

Troughton's Doctor was certainly different, but not necessarily
worse.

Yes, I thought so too. I've never found her annoying though. She was of

I didn't say he was worse. I meant Pertwee's Doctor had an authority
Troughton's Doctor lacked. I was just pointing out the differences in
the two Doctor's personalities. I could easily have said 2 had an impish
charm that 3 lacked, for example.

It may have seemd like that at the time, but are there any Delgado
stories that we wish he hadn't been in?

Jacobi seemed a little two mad to me, but there isn't really enough of
his Master performance to judge.

Yes, Troughton's performance had nearly as much depth, range and
vulnerability as Hartnell's. I'd rate Troughton second out of the ten,
though there's nothing wrong with Pertwee or early Tom.
But Pertwee *is* the most authoritative. Who else could have made a
thrilling cliffhanger out of "Right, cut it open!"?

How are any of those faults? They're character flaws, but flawed
characters are interesting.
> * Baker T - to me the less said about Season 17 the better
Tom goes a bit over the top in Season 17, but Season 18 seems to me to
be his worst. He's mostly just *dull*.
<...>

Matt Smith is young enough to be my son. His performance is going to
have to be amazing for me to accept him.
But that's OK. They're not making the show for nostalgic old gits.

But at least it's about Doctor Who, unlike almost everything else
posted here.
It seemed to me that you did imply that Pertwee as authoritative not
only in Frontier but also in other stories, and I agreed with that
implication.
But of course, Troughton never dressed in women's clothes (especially
not in The Underwater Menace) or perpetrated horrifically awful music
(especially not in Power of the Daleks) or did anything amusingly
acrobatic (especially not in The Invasion).
Who cares? Either respond to the points he made or move on to some
other conversation.
Your opinions about DW are interesting. IF's opinions about DW are

You're thinking of the cut scene in which Jo tootles on the Master's
bone flute.

The primitives don't self-destruct. Only their leader does.
Personally, I find Colony In Space much duller than Frontier in Space,
but at least it was the basic for an excellent Target book.
What we did see was a bit too camp for my liking. I don't think he'd
have made a great impression long term. I didn't think Simm was that
good in the role either. The Master should look masterful, not like a
bank clerk.

Do you ever get bored at constantly having to change nicknames and post

They can be synonyms, but not if they're contrasted with each other.
The point is that a fault (or flaw) in the character is not a flaw (or
fault) in the story.
And that was a rhetorical question, okay?

There were no newsgroups or Web forums in those days. If you were a
fan, you watched the show and bought the books. You also ran around
the playground shouting "Exterminate!" and "I am the Master! You will
obey me!" a lot.
At least, that's what you did if you were born in 1964.
> And then there was the
> thrill of hunting down the older books in second-hand bookshops when you

I bought them all new (or rather, my parents did) up to /Doctor Who
and the Mutants/, which was the last one I bought before I completely
lost interest. I sold them all when I was 17, which I now regret. I
could buy replacement copies, but it wouldn't be quite the same.
Do you remember the tantalising glimpses of the Hartnell and Troughton
eras that were offered by /The Making of Doctor Who/?
No. But as I'm not arguing with Yads anymore why would anyone killfile me?
Perhaps you might wish to post on topic instead of wasting your time
stalking?
No. As I said "Not interested in reading the Who books".

Why "should" I? I have other interests outside of Who. The tv series and
DVDs are sufficient. If the books work for you, fine, but I'm not

No, sorry. I'm three or four years younger than you so Pertwee was my first
Doctor...
There was a second hand bookshop in Plymouth called `Bonus Books` ( come to
think of it, it`s still there I believe! ) which my Dad would take me to
every time the family went into town. There were always second hand Who
target books in there and occaionally a load would turn up all at once...it
was like a treasure trove. I have quite fond memories of walking in there
and seeing two rows of new second hand books, trawling through them trying
to decide which ones to get! I knew these were old TV stories novelised and
they became like some holy grail in my mind...Dr Who I`d never seen but
could read about. I was devastated to find out many years later that all
these TV stories had been ditched or wiped. Always annoys me when people
defend the Beeb`s policy over this, saying that they`d never have known
there would eventually be a demand for old Dr Who episodes. When I was 7
years old reading The Web Fear I`d have *loved* the chance to actually see
it. If I knew it`s value as a 7 year old why was some adult in the
television industry ordering it`s death!? Bastards!!

Stupidity is a condition
Ignorance is a choice
It's comments like that from David (and his claim that I'm jealous of
his Twitter "followers", - as if it was somehow important) that make me
wonder if he's just being deliberately inflammatory, but then I think
that the comments are so nuts that it's just down to his condition. I
think he actually believes it, which is sad, but it's really not his
fault due to the way his mind perceives the world.
I challenged him on this before. He was going to tell me exactly where. This
was some time ago (years rather than months). He also promised to explain
exactly where the Bible said the talking snake was Satan. I'm still waiting.
He can't find it. He won't find it. But he'll carry on spouting the same
crap regardless.
But again this is part of his condition. He makes rash statements then
when challenged he says he'll back it up, thinking we'll forget and
that'll be the end of it. It's the childlike way his mind works. I know
this sounds like I'm excusing him, and I am, - he simply can't help
himself. No one would be so obtuse for so many years on purpose.
Anyway, there I go wasting time talking about him again. Meanwhile back
on topic....
Re: Frontier in Space. Is it just me or did anyone else think that
"Madame President" in that story may have influenced the character of
Servalan from Blake's 7? And her right hand man was quite like Travis too!
That is the STUPIDEST thing I think you've ever posted.
He does seem to place a lot of emphasis on twitter friends and Usenet Posts,
when in reality they mean nothing in the real world. I also have been
working at ignoring him and could care less if he has twitter followers ( is
"Twat" the singular of Twit?)
How this post was way over the edge but in truth I suspect that I have been
trolled by Doc once again.
It would be sad in this day and age if he actually believed this particular
statement as truth. And very pathetic too.
He will run away again as he always does when challenged and pop up again
with another load of crap to be served piping hot to Usenet.
He is the master of the hit and run Usenet post where quantity is more
important the quality.
Said troll snowman.
Please don't troll PV.
TRoll denying Christianity for you.
Whay? ARe you one ? Wait a Nazi comes close.
2 jealous trolls ganging up.
