I enjoyed the latest Doctor Who season, even if I did feel a bit let down by the 'Bad Wolf' ending, and I want to take a closer look at 'classic' Who. I saw a few of the Tom Baker episodes a couple of years ago back when I could still get UkGold, but I've never seen any of the other Doctors except the made for TV movie.
I'm thinking of buying a few DVDs of 'classic' Doctor Who. Just one, or at most two, for each Doctor. So I would appreciate it if some people could recommend what they think is the 'best' story for each Doctor. I'm in the UK and unfortunately my DVD player is region specific.
1- The Aztecs 2- Tomb Of The Cybermen (at least of the DVDs,though Mind Robber is great too) 3- Mind of Evil, or, on DVD, Carnival Of Monsters or The Green Death 4- Talons Of Weng Chiang 5- Frontios, or Caves Of Androzani if it must be DVD 6- Revelation Of The Daleks 7- Curse Of Fenric
I'll second "Caves of Androzani" for Peter Davison. Not necessarily the best of his stories, but definitely the best I've seen him in the role. It's ironic that he hit his peak at the end, going out at the top of his game.

Well, in a highly opinionated (and tied-to-what's-on-DVD way):
First, could I say I was in Kingston-Upon-Thames yesterday and the BBC shop there was selling all of the Classic Who DCDs at £9.99. The Ecclestons were a bit more expensive. If I didn't have them all already I'd have bought:
Hartnell: Dalek Invasion of Earth Troughton: Tomb of the Cybermen Pertwee: Spearhead from Space T Baker: Robots of Death or Pyramids of Mars Davison: Caves of Androzani C Baker: Skip it and buy one of the audios, where he's excellent McCoy: Ditto McGann: Ditto

Agree with both the stories, but I'd hardly call them 'lost', as in can no longer be enjoyed. I've pretty much got the whole of the sixties era on CD now and they seem as real and as present as anything you need a telly for.

I'm looking forward to when this is announced as a DVD release - I loved it as a Target novelisation when I was a kid, I loved it as an early teen when it was released and I'll love it when it comes out on DVD hopefully within a couple of years.

The Pertwee era is one for which I tend to enjoy all roughly the same, so it's hard for me to pick out a favourite. If I were to have only one Pertwee DVD though I'd go for Spearhead From Space, purely for early VHS nostalgia reasons.

I'd choose Robots of Death for pretty much the same reason as Spearhead. One of these days I'd like to see the old logo used at the start of those very early videos as an Easter Egg.
> Davison - Best story - by a country mile it has to be Caves of Androzani, > which is also out on DVD.
By a country mile, yes, though to my surprise I found The Visitation very enjoyable a week or two ago.

And, alongside the already mentioned Androzani, comprises the back catalogue of DrWho stories by season 2 director Graeme Harper.

Greatest Show would be a worthy release for 2006, i think. I didn't like it much when it was shown on telly, but reappraising it five years later it became a favourite.
> McGann - Skip this TV movie unless you find it in a bargain bin IMO. I have > no real desire to ever see it again.
Go for the Big Finish audios instead, just off the top of my head try out The Stones of Venice, INvaders from Mars, Seasons of Fear, and Embrace the Darkness. The Last is also very good, the Terror Firma is out in a month or two.
Hartnell : Best story - Daleks Masterplan, unfortunately most of it is lost / wiped. Other than that I`d say my favourite is Dalek Invasion of Earth, which is also out on DVD. the other Hartnell DVD - The Aztecs - is arguably his best historical story, depends if that appeals to you or not. I have to admit, Hartnell`s era is not chock full of personal classics.
Troughton - Best story - hmmm, probably Power of the Daleks or Web of Fear, both lost. Of the surviving ones, The War Games is an absolute favourite of mine. Of the DVD releases I`d go for Tomb of the Cybermen without question.
Pertwee - Best story - either Inferno or The Silurians for me. Best DVD release so far is probably Carnival of Monsters. Personally I`m still waiting for the first classic Pertwee release.
T Baker - Best story - many to choose from, either City of Death, Terror of the Zygons, Seeds of Doom, Genesis of the Daleks or Talons of Weng Chiang. Only the latter of those 5 is available on DVD so go for that one. Although CoD is due out in november.
Davison - Best story - by a country mile it has to be Caves of Androzani, which is also out on DVD.
C Baker - Best story - Revelation of the Daleks, which is just about the only ColDoc story I`m especially enthusiastic about. Out in a few weeks on DVD.
McCoy - Best story - only 4 that I like at all, Curse of Fenric, Rememberance of the Daleks, Ghostlight and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. The first 3 are all out on DVD and equally worthy.
McGann - Skip this TV movie unless you find it in a bargain bin IMO. I have no real desire to ever see it again.
Crusade. Literate, humane, and light years above pulp stuff like DMP.
> Troughton - Best story - hmmm, probably Power of the Daleks or Web of > Fear, both lost.
War Games pips them - better actors and a real-world-relevant dilemma (war).
> Pertwee - Best story - either Inferno or The Silurians for me. Best > DVD release so far is probably Carnival of Monsters. Personally I`m > still waiting for the first classic Pertwee release.
Green Death. Without a doubt. True emotion, great "love triangle", real respect.
> T Baker - Best story - many to choose from, either City of Death, > Terror of the Zygons, Seeds of Doom, Genesis of the Daleks or Talons > of Weng Chiang.
Oft repeated (too much) but Genesis is still his defining story.
> Davison - Best story - by a country mile it has to be Caves of > Androzani, which is also out on DVD.
Visitation, far less Saturday Morning Serial, far more about monsters regretting their condition (instead of mindles revenge). And it looks gorgeous (not just shades of beige).
> C Baker - Best story - Revelation of the Daleks, which is just about > the only ColDoc story I`m especially enthusiastic about. Out in a few > weeks on DVD.
Nope. Two Doctors. It's got Troughton. And Jackie Pearce. Nuff said.
> McCoy - Best story - only 4 that I like at all, Curse of Fenric, > Rememberance of the Daleks, Ghostlight and The Greatest Show in the > Galaxy. The first 3 are all out on DVD and equally worthy.
All crap, though Fenric is the least worst.
> McGann - Skip this TV movie unless you find it in a bargain bin IMO. > I have no real desire to ever see it again.

Must admit, that`s one of the dwindling few I still haven`t seen / heard yet. I hear it`s a classic although I`m not a lover of the historicals ( which is odd because I`m quite keen on history ).
>> Troughton - Best story - hmmm, probably Power of the Daleks or Web of >> Fear, both lost.

I do love the War Games to bits, I`ll be overjoyed to see it get a DVD release one day. Whether it`s better than PotD or WoF is something we`ll probably never know. I can`t say I agree with Brax when he says having the audio only is as good and he still feels like he`s seen the stories. To me it`s just not the same, one of the things I love about Troughton`s performance is his facial expressions, from his looks of anguish and fear to wonder and delight, plus the little subtle bits with Jamie ( how many more do we not know of like the hand holding scene in Abominable Snowmen ). I really do feel genuinely sad that I`ll never get to see so many of these stories, what`s left of Troughton`s era is pretty much enough for me to consider it my favourite era of Who.

I like GD but there`s a few Pertwee stories I prefer. As well as the above I really like Curse of Peladon and always thought Invasion of the Dinosaurs was very under-rated. Also, Sea Devils is another personal favourite.

Can`t argue too much with this. There does seem to have been a backlash against this story over recent years, probably due to over familiarity. I mean, most of the criticisms that get thrown at it ( overlong with plot holes ) can be thrown at around half the series.

Well, Visitation is probably one of my more preferred Davison`s but to compare it with CoA is lunacy IMO! Still, we all dance to a different beat.
>> C Baker - Best story - Revelation of the Daleks, which is just about >> the only ColDoc story I`m especially enthusiastic about. Out in a few >> weeks on DVD.
> Nope. Two Doctors. It's got Troughton. And Jackie Pearce. Nuff said.
It may have Troughton but it`s hardly a great story. Jackie Pearce just plays Servlan all over again! Not that I`m complaining of course. I always thought T2D was a wasted opportunity. It`s decent, which is more than can be said for much of this era, but not much more than that. Troughton was of course superb - when was he not?
>> McCoy - Best story - only 4 that I like at all, Curse of Fenric, >> Rememberance of the Daleks, Ghostlight and The Greatest Show in the >> Galaxy. The first 3 are all out on DVD and equally worthy.

I`m not in the total hatred camp when it comes to Sly. Overall it was an era I didn`t much care for but those 4 stories were all enjoyable although they all fall short of classic Who. I`m always mystified as to how high CoF gets in Dr Who story polls.
>> McGann - Skip this TV movie unless you find it in a bargain bin IMO. >> I have no real desire to ever see it again.

As much as I thought McGann was brilliant the film failed for me. I`d rather sit through Rememberance or Ghost Light than this again.

I was one of the people who quite vocally 'backlashed' the story, but that was simply down to over-exposure of the story in the nineties. Now we're halfway through the noughties I feel it's now time to celebrate if it gets announced as a DVD release.

How far behind are the US releases of the "classic" Who series on DVD? I have been looking forward to the DVD of "City of Death" ever since I ehard they were doing one.
As far as the Big Finish rpoductions, i wanted to get several of these stories but shipping to the US is prohibitive. At the same time I want to be somewhat ethical. Any chance they will be licensed for iTunes or podcast in the USA? And what happens to them when the BBC license on Docotr Who for that company expires -- no more productions or withdrawl of all releases?

Hartnell: Hard to say. Of the DVDs released so far, probably The Aztecs. Troughton: Tomb of the Cybermen. Wonderfully claustrophobic. Pertwee: The Green Death Tom Baker: The Pirate Planet Davison: Caves of Andorzani Colin Baker: Vengeance on Varos (Colin needed many mroe scripts of this caliber, an uninterrupted production schedule, a better replacement for peri than Bonnie Langford, and two more years in the part to be what he could have become). McCoy: Rememebrance of the Daleks (the first story in which he got to ne HIS OWN Doctor -- and what a wonderful character he was!) Eccleston: Dalek (The sofa is not enough protection, as one Dalek wipes out an army and the Doctor confronts demons both literal and personal)

Depends which episodes - in the UK we still haven't had the Key to Time, which has been out in the US for several years.

Us too - out later this year I believe in the UK, so we haven't had it either.

A good idea - why don't you e-mail itto Big Finish? If they're persuaded enough people would take the idea up, there might be a deal to be cut. If they're not persuaded then of course they won't do it - but the more people who ask....

www.gallifreyone.com would be a good place to check out, as it lists all releases for both sides of the Atlantic. I think it's the following year that the region one editions are released.

I would imagine that they'd cease production, that is, they'd be out of print.
