How important is it to stay at a Disney hotel in DL?

Hey:

When we visit WDW, we always stay at a Disney resort simply because we like
the convenience, theming, and convenience of hopping on a bus to get to the
parks. But it sounds like the Candy Cane Inn is just across the street and
is decently priced.

Any thoughts?

The Candy Cane Inn is usually a great value for what you get. It is a
quiet comfortable motel with a continental breakfast and a bus to the
park that runs every 30 minutes (although it is certainly close enough
to walk). There are two convenience stores next store (an ABC Market
and a 7-11).

The few times we have gone it is not very important.

Granted when you stay at a non-Disney resort you don't get the perks and
theming that you do with Disney but there are enough places to stay within
walking distance that it is not bad. There are even a few places that are a
shorter walk than the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier.

If you stay away from Disneyland most places have shuttle service that runs
on a decent schedule and in places even 5 or 6 miles away the ride is still
less than most of the buses at Disney World.

Just get your shuttle schedule and plan your 'exit' from the parks so your
wait is only a few minutes.

Michelle,
I'm sorry if that came off heavy handed or, as Rodney said, a "smack
down". That was not my intention - I was just making a humorous
observation but, unfortunately, that sometimes gets lost in the
written word. Feel free to use "OT" whenever you'd like and I'll just
shut up ;-) (See, I remembered the emoticon this time)

The CCI is not one of the hotels that's across the street from
the DL entrance, although several hotels are. Instead, it's
down Harbor Blvd.--about a 10-minute walk, or, as others have
noted, they have their own shuttle bus.

The Disney hotels do not, of course, run buses since they're so
close to the parks--although you can take the monorail if you're
going to Tomorrowland.

Disneyland only has three Disney-owned resorts, and they are all
"deluxe" resorts, so if you want to stay in something a little more
moderately priced you'll have to choose one of the "off-site" motels.
But some of them are a closer walk to the parks than the Disney hotels
are! I've stayed in several of them, and they've all been just fine -
nothing fancy, but the rooms have been clean and decently appointed.
The Best Western Park Place Inn is the closest to Disneyland - I've
stayed there, as well as the Tropicana (next door), the Desert Inn (a
couple doors down) and the Portofino (further, since it's on the next
block, and they are looooong blocks).

Candy Cane Inn consistently gets good reviews, though I have not stayed
there myself. I like the Best Western just because it's a shorter walk
than the CCI. Be aware that there are several Best Westerns in that
area, though! I put a page up on AllEars earlier this year that has
some information on the off-site places, specifically the ones that
Disney has labeled "Good Neighbor" accommodations.

Folks who've used Anaheim Resort Transit can chime in here, but
from what I've read, it can be a tedious way to get to and from
DL. Much better is to stay at a hotel that's within easy walking
distance, or one such as the Candy Cane that has its own buses.
(The CCI is also within easy walking distance.)

Walking over rules. We stayed at the Tropicana across the street, and while
it was not the Taj Mahal, it was decent. Just walked on over.....

"across the street" can still mean a mile or two walk to a pedestrian
entrance.
DL is about two square miles. And in the southern California
tradition its designed to efficiently move cars at at entrances.

It's only several hundred feet from Harbor Boulevard to the two
entrances. And Harbor itself is, what, six or eight lanes? So
not even a quarter of a mile from hotels across the street to
the entrances.

>DL is about two square miles.

The original property (DL and the parking lot) is about 100 acres.
Even if you include over to the Disneyland Hotel, I doubt you'd get
more than about, oh, half a square mile or so? Plus a little more
for the parking structure.

Yep, first time we stayed near DL was in 2002, I think, and we stayed in the
Holiday Inn that used to be the Conestoga. It was "only" six blocks from
the park. Six very long blocks, which we didn't walk since there was a
hotel shuttle. I'm used to living where 12 city blocks equals a mile.
These blocks were more like a quarter mile a piece. Subsequent stays have
been farther away and we've used a rental car for those so it didn't matter.

I exaggerated :-)
I took a look at google maps. Its 3000' by 5000' or
a little more than a half-square mile. It seemed bigger,
especially nagivating all those parking structures.

Fizzie, thank you for your veto of confidence! I like the CCI. It's
clean, a short walk to the parks, free WiFi and continental bfast and
very nice staff too. I might stay at a Disneyland hotel but a couple
times I tried and no rooms were available and then I found this one.
People on RADP have been singing its praises for years and it lives up
to those praises. We did stay our first time bere in 1990 about at the
Disneyland Hotel (we won a trip) and it was nice. The second time here,
we stayed at a Hampton in about 3/4 f a mile down Harbor. It was just
OK, CCI beats them all.

Thanks Lisa! I've been checking out some of the hotels and I get an "ick"
when I look at pictures of the rooms - ratty old bedspreads and dingy
carpet. CCI looked nice and fresh. And I gather from comments there are
some decent places to eat around there so we're not at the mercy of Disney
food all the time?

I've just ordered Birbaum's DL guide -- hope it gets here before Christmas

I would also get the Unofficial Guide to Disneyland and there is a
Passporter Guide also. Going down Katella are other larger hotels too.
I think the beds at CCI are Doubles but very comfortable to sleep on.
We had a king bed at home so we each get our own bed.

I think it's such fun to plan a vacation like this. I am not planning
a two week trip from San Francisco to Seattle for September '10. And
the other couple are easy to travel with.

Lots of fun in store for you.

I stayed at the Super 8 on Katella last August and it was fine. I had
an ECV to ride around on, so just used the ECV to get back to the
room. (I was on week 7 of medical leave) What was a bonus is the
Riverwalk (?) shopping area near there. VERY close to my hotel was a
PF Changs, California Pizza Kitchen, Bubba Gumps, Cheesecake Factory,
and some other Asian fusion restaurant. It just amazed me how close
everything was. I could leave Disneyland after the fireworks and was
back at my room within 15 minutes. I think the walk from the back
side of Epcot to the All-Stars bus stops is farther!!

Yeah, I feel that way, too, about hotels. And this is the condition we
found our room at PO-FQ several years back that prompted us to leave and
move over to AKL. Even Disney can have crappy hotel rooms.

Not remotely important. The one and only time I went to DL, I stayed
at the Candy Cane Inn. It's less than a block away from the Esplanade
(the central plaza that separates DLP from DCA). The backside of it,
as I recall, actually borders the back side of DCA. There is a
shuttle, but it makes significantly more sense to walk unless you have
mobility issues and/or the shuttle is leaving the exact moment you
walk outside your hotel room door. (FWIW, CCI is just down the road,
on the same side as DL, not across the street. IIRC, across the
street is a Denny's).

There is no "extra magic hours" or resort package delivery at DL, so
those extra on-site perks at WDW don't apply to DL. The only reasons
I can see to pay the extra money to stay at one of the three DL
resorts is would be: 1) You *need* to be surrounded by Disney theming
24/7, or 2) you are the type of person who isn't in the parks from
opening to closing, like I am.

When I stayed at the Grand Californian, I was admitted to DCA an hour
early, every day. You could only get in via the GC's entrance to the
park.

That was in 2005. Don't know if it still applies.

We were on a package and did have early entry to DL one morning.
Never even considered using it. And we had special seating
coupons for some attractions but we never used those either.
The crowds were just not that bad EXCEPT for the Holiday
Haunted Mansion, iasw, and Soarin. I don't think the line
at Soarin will EVER be less than 30 minutes at either Epcot
or DCA.It's like Peter Pan.
