DAY 5 – Monday 1/04/10
Who: Sue (51), DVC member
SB (52), Sexy Boyfriend

Plan: Drive to Gainesville

Actual: I slept really well again. Maybe it’s because it’s so quiet
here?? I work up just after 7:30, and SB was already awake. He
watched the Today show while I took my shower, dressed, and had some
cappuccino. We decided to have 1 more breakfast at Hilton Head Diner,
but we didn’t want to time our arrival in Gainesville before our room
would be ready. It’s another beautiful but frigid day outside!

About 9 we drove over to Hilton Head Diner, where I once again got the
French toast. It’s funny – I had this 3 days in a row and the portion
was not the same on any 2 of the days <g>. SB got 3 eggs, sausage,
hash browns, toast and a side of grits (plus large OJ). The check was
just under $20. He had the nerve to question why it cost so much –
lol, mine was $5.79 so evidently he ate the rest!

We were on the road before 10, and had a boring and uneventful trip
back to Gainesville. Along the way I mentioned to my supervisor in
Tallahassee that today’s “vacation day” wasn’t much of a vacation
since I’m driving 4 hours to Gainesville, so I’ll take Jan 19th
instead. This way we can leave BLT and drive home at our leisure
instead of leaving at 4am so I can be to work at 7:30!

Overall I enjoyed being at Hilton Head but hated the really cold
weather. SB was ok being there, but if it was up to him no doubt we’d
never set foot on the grounds again. I’m really looking forward to my
solo trip here in late May – should be beach weather then!

The photos from this trip are on Snapfish, and you shouldn’t have to
sign in to view them. There are lots of food porn pics, too!

The next trip will be a long weekend over the Martin Luther King
holiday. We’ll be staying at Disney’s Bay Lake Tower Resort again, in
a lake view studio.

Until next time – thanks for reading.

Hello,

Thanks for the TR. I almost booked a night at HH on our drive back down from
NY, but nothing was available. We're going to try a long weekend there this
spring.

If you're at BLT Wed-Fri, stop by the CT marina after 4 and say hello!!
Take care,

Bill

Sue-
Thanks for the great photos! Where is that statue of Poseidon?
We spend the first week of June in HH every year and I've always wondered
what the DVC Resort looked like. We rent a condo in Palmetto Dunes, just
down the road from the DVC Beachhouse.
If I may, I have some restaurant suggestions for your next trip if you're
looking for some new places to eat:

1) Del Vecchios-DH is from NY, so he's very particular about his pizza and
veal dishes. The owner's from Long Island and the food is authentic. In the
Fresh Market shopping center.

2)Sea Shack-Dont let appearances fool you...formica tables covered in
oilcloth, paper plates, nondescript building-The line for lunch starts
forming way before the doors open. Wide variety of fish and shellfish, but
you could make a meal just from the sides and sweet potato cornbread! Off of
Pope Ave.

3)Harold's Diner-Again, run down building/diner with the greatest burgers
run by rabid Red Sox fans. I read about it in Golf Digest while I was in a
doctor's waiting room. On 278 as you near Shelter Cove.

4)Smokehouse-Really good smoked chicken and brisket when you are not in the
mood for seafood. On Pope Avenue.

5)Pino Gelato-We found this place by accident and were very very happy we
did! In the Village at Wexford on 278.

6)Marley's Island Grill-White tablecloth place, great food with Jamaican
flavors. On 278 near the Sea Pines Circle.

7)Captain Woody's-Local hangout in the Palmetto Bay Marina-Eat a grouper
sandwich (their specialty) then walk around and check out the ships, shops
and water views to work it off!

So it sounds like all we do on Hilton Head is eat, right?! In our defense,
we also bike, play minigolf, go to the movies, dolphin cruise, fish, beach,
etc. Still, there always comes a point during the week when I wonder why I'm
not in WDW!

Michelle, I saved this one. I might some day get to HH. I remember
from years ago, a terrific German restaurant on the main road in.
But that was probably 15 years ago, maybe 20! Goodness. We
are not beach people clearly... I think the kids were teens and they
are NOT teens any more.

Thanks Michelle - some of those restaurants were familiar to me, but a
couple are new names. We had heard of Harold's Diner but then forgot
all about it - maybe next time. I'll be sure SB is wearing one of his
Twins shirts.

Hilton Head is a great eating place - nothing wrong with that ;-)

Thanks for the TR, Sue.
Have always wanted to visit Hilton Head and from there Savannah and
Charleston. (Need to see Scarlet's stomping grounds!)
