WDW Trip Report - February, 2004

People: Self (Figaro aka Kathy) and my spouse Den
Place: Pop Century
Time: January 31st to February 10th

Day Twelve - Wednesday, February 10th - The Trip Home and Final
Thoughts

Wake up call was right at 4 a.m. Of course Den as usual had woken up
before the wake-up call and so I was awake too(sigh). Got cleaned up,
packed up and put fresh ice in the ziploc baggie with my medications.
Headed downstairs at 4:30 a.m. and I lay down on the couch in the
lobby and went back to sleep. Woke up at 5 a.m. when the shuttle
arrived (well, actually Den woke me up after he had everything loaded
onto the shuttle)(smile).

Off to the airport we went, where I introduced Den to the joys of
curbside check-in since we already had our seat assignments. I have
to admit, Orlando handles the wheelchair stuff very well, and Den even
listened to me this time and took all of his keys and change out of
his pockets so he didn't set off the metal detector even once(smile).

We stopped at the Burger King in the airport so Den could get a
breakfast biscuit, while I finished the apple from the hotel that he
hadn't eaten last night. We then sat at the gate (me in a sleepy
stupor, him reading a computer magazine of some sort). I was very
glad that they didn't upgrade us to first class this time, as the
plane was not full at all, and we each had an entire row to ourselves.
I took one of the pillows, both of our winter coats, lay down and went
to sleep until we started our descent into Chicago.

The connecting flight was off in some distant part of the airport, but
since the person pushing the wheelchair knew where it was, we didn't
have any problem getting there. The flight home was smooth and my
sister pulled up just as our plane was letting the passengers off. It
was quite a bit colder and snowier here than it was when we
left(smile).

Final thoughts:

This trip was just about the perfect length for the two of us. I was
ready to get home and while I felt a bit sad about leaving WDW, I
didn't feel like we hadn't spent enough time there. The parks and
resorts looked fine to the two of us. They were even re-painting the
outside walls of the 50's section of Pop Century a few days before we
left, even though we couldn't see any peeling paint or other problems.

Pop Century met our expectations and was just fine for the two of us,
probably because the resort we stay in isn't all that big of a deal
for us. The buses worked well when we used them, which is important
to us, as the multiple stops can sometimes add up to very long waits
for me, as full bus after full bus will pull up and then leave because
there is no room for the wheelchair. Having just one bus stop solves
that particular problem and Pop Century is very centrally located and
it is easy to get to all of the parks from there.

The shows were wonderful as always. We loved Four for a Dollar and
the Voices of Liberty. Listening to the four sax players at the Magic
Kingdom and watching the little ones dance is a very special and fun
memory.

For some reason, the flowers and other plants were really spectacular
this trip. I even noticed how they will plant flowers in areas that
really aren't seen all that much by the guests and the flower beds
were well tended with almost no weeds. One of these days I am going
to convince Den to take the tour that talks about all of the flowers
and plants at Epcot(smile).

It was a great deal of fun to get to meet and spend time with the
other people from RADP and I hope to get that opportunity again in the
future. We don't have a trip planned at the moment and I don't know
if we will be back again in 2004. If it happens, that's okay, but if
it doesn't, well, we have lots of friends and family in a whole bunch
of places around the U.S. and spending time with them will be fun too!

Again, thank you everyone who took the time to tell me that they were
reading my trip reports. I really would have wimped out and not
finished it about 5 days in(smile).

Oh, and I will never, ever, ever do another Comedy Warehouse report.
I love reading the ones Sue writes, but I just am not a quick enough
listener or writer (the laughing hysterically tends to distract me and
slow me down)(smile), to ever be able to write the detailed reports
that she does.

And now I am going to look forward to getting my Disney "fix" by
reading everyone else's trip reports!

Kathy

Kathy,

Yours is the first trip report that I have read (in it's entirety) on
RADP. I simply can not find the time most days. As I am right now
drinking my morning coffee here in Hong Kong and the day is without a
single meeting, I found some time.

I can see why everyone on RADP loves these reports. I guess I was
feeling a little homesick and your descriptions and observations
brought WDW right here to me to enjoy. Thank You!

The pleasure was all ours and I will look forward to the next time.

I would find this hard to believe. You strike me as a person that gets things
done despite the pressures or pleasures around them. {:-)

Wow..hope the trip is wonderful...
My brother was there again on business not too long ago and loves the
city.

I guess it takes a lot of travel experience, but this has just become second
nature to me. I have a routine where I stop somewhere between the ticket
counter and the security check to "cleans" myself of metal. I never "beep"
anywhere except in my home city of Birmingham. I always beep there and have
to go through an extra search.

Hmm, someday I need to try spending 11 days at WDW! So far, out record is 7
in a row and we are always sad when we leave.

For us, the resort is almost as much a part of the vacation as the parks.
Even though we don't spend that much time in the room, we still enjoy
returning to nice surroundings when we finish a hard day in the parks.

The easily overlooked foliage at WDW is just part of the magic that lives in
the details. While we might never notice if some of these plants and
flowers were missing, by being there, it certainly adds to the overall
experience.

I swear, when I know there's a meet planned, I look forward to that almost
as much as I look forward to my entire vacation(and I have yet to be
disappointed)!

Yes, we are in the same situation here. I believe our next trip will
definitely be during December to enjoy the Christmas decorations, but I'm
not sure it's going to happen this year. If not, I am guessing I will make
it down for at least a few days if I can plan a business trip to the area.

Kathy, thanks for a great TR! I enjoyed every word!

Thank you for sharing your trip memories and for sticking with writing
your TR. I haven't finished it yet, but it's been especially nice to
see it here everyday, like a mini-WDW oasis, amidst some of the weird
cross-postings we've been getting lately.
Thanks again,
MickeyC

Kathy,

I have a huge favor to ask. I haven't been here
for a few weeks and missed the first half of your
trip report. I've managed to find all but day
five on Google. Would it be possible for you to
repost that day? I'm saving all the days to read
at once.

Thanks so much,
Wendy

Hi, Wendy!

I will re-post it and put "re-post" in the subject line. Let me know
if there is any problems!

Kathy, thanks so much! I've got it all saved and
ready to read. Now as soon as things calm down at
work, I'll have time to read it! Again, thank
you for sharing.
