"Animation Art, The Early Years 1911-1953" by Jeff Lotman.
This recently published book by seasoned collector Jeff Lotman is over
430 pages. He has reviewed over 6000 pieces of art, covering the
period of 1911-1953, sold at the major animation art auctions held in
the past ten years.
"Animation Art, The Early Years" has chapters on "The Basics of
Animation Art" and "Buying, Selling, and Locating Art". Not only is
this book a good visual reference for the novice or advanced collector,
but will be quite handy as a price guide. The bulk of this book
reproduces the art itself and lists the price that each piece was sold
for. Almost every single page is crammed with art, the vast majority
having an average of 15 cels and/or drawings on each page. This book
totals over 6000 pictures!
In covering these early years of animation art, the author has covered
all the major and smaller studios, from the Winsor McCay Studio in 1911
to Sullivan to Fleischer to Disney to Walter Lantz to Iwerks to MGM to
Warner Brothers and a host of others in between. The last film to be
covered for period is the 1953 Walt Disney film Peter Pan. Easy to use
as a reference, the book is divided into sections on each studio. Each
section then lists each cartoon short or film in chronological order.
In addition, a section in the back of the book lists additional auction
results for artwork not pictured.
This book is an invaluable reference.
