I'm glad to hear they're doing well. I lit "Gold, Frankincence, and
Myrhh" for them a couple of years ago and am very fond of the company.
>Anyone see any other dance
companies lately? >
Well, yes.
The University Dance Theatre at the University of Houston just closed an
excellent concert as did Chrysalis Dance Company (also in Houston).
Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth and the Raven Dance Project will be
performing in Huntsville, TX this weekend and then in Ft. Worth the
following week.
I am also very interested in ballet. I danced for ten years in a
professional training program, and now that i have made the decision to
attend school i am looking for a way to keep in touch with the "real"
world...
I don't know much about jazz, although i have, of course, had a small
amount of experience in it. Most of all my love is for pure ballet.

I haven't seen anything live...but did anyone else see the Royal Ballet's
production *Still Life at the Penguin Cafe* on TV a few weeks ago? I think
it was on Bravo. Really fun stuff.

I saw Joffrey perform "Billboards" in January - it was really awesome.
My friend and i snuck up to the second row - great music and TONS of
energy. Some of the first pieces I think could have been cleaner,
technically, but the last piece was something outstanding. (This was
the third or fourth live performance I have seen by Joffrey, and for the
most part I have always been impressed by them.)
I also saw Pittsburgh Ballet Theater do "Romeo and Juliet" in February.
I was little disappointed, first because it was the Prokofiev version
where I prefer the Tchaikovsky, but also i felt it could have been
directed a little better...
PBT, however, seems to be growing as a company, and they did a nice job
(just no where near as exciting as the Joffrey i had just seen).

What kinds of articles would you all be interested in? Reviews of ballet
performances, opinions of various companies, the search for the perfect toe
shoe, etc? I think the ballet people are out there, but are not sure what
kind of stuff to post.
Send the ballet articles in!

I second this! Dancers' Archive only has one or two articles in it about
ballet besides the history of Ballet & Modern dance in Switzerland. Where am I
going to find other stuff if not from you guys??
(btw, the Archive is @ftp.std.com /ftp/pub/dance ; non-geographically
specific articles are in /ftp/pub/dance/topics The swiss article is in
/ftp/pub/dance/switzerland . Actually, it's 40 pages, so I guess you couldn't
call that an article...

I saw Miami City Ballet perform in Los Angeles last Saturday.
Three Balanchine works (Apollo, The Four Temperaments, and "Rubies" from
"Jewels") plus a short piece choreographed by MCB's resident choreographer.
Although the performances were good, the highlight of my evening was
a pre-performance talk with Villella. Although his dancing career was
before my time, a power and energy still emanated from him which I only have
noted with a very small number of daners.
Do you know whether there are any videos of Villella's performances while
at NY City Ballet ?
BTW, "Footstep" is a great Net "handle" !!!! :)
Are you a dancer ?

I am mostly interested in Jazz, and it seems that ballet is also an
art where you are out there performing solo. In a group perhaps,
but some of the moves and technique depend on you - you're not
following or leading like in Ballroom. Although the ballroom folks
may have some good ideas also - I would like someone to comment on
stage experinces, feeling comfortable - who or what happpened to them
when they realized "Hey I can do this and it looks good", what teachers
influenced them the most?
I guess I would really enjoy hearing about "real people's"
experiences - not necessarily Barishnekov (sp?) latest
triumph. Although the stars are "great" - I think it would
help to hear what others have done.

There was a Jeff Satinoff that danced with Chamber Ballet USA, I believe. Are
you that person? I just completed the dancing portion of my career with Ballet
Iowa a few seasons ago...with Elizabeth Harano, also a former Chamber Ballet
dancer. I just caught their "Macbeth" with choreography by Konstantin Uralsky
this weekend. Truly an epic effort possibly one of the best things the local
director Kennet Oberly that were fairly cutting edge at the time!
company has done. Galls me to say having appeared in a few things by former
director

I caught this excerpt in a post that i did not quite understand... i
think that some things must be missing. However, seeing the name Kennet
Oberly caught my attention, he is a man who earns my upmost respect as a
teacher, and even more as a person.... - I would be really interesting
on hearing about him, and what he is currently doing. I know that his
specialty is in Bourneville (He interned at our studio a few times, and
my most vivid memories are of learning the "Flower Festival" pas de duex
from him.) I assumed from your post that he is a director of a company
- is it mostly bourneville, or is he using more styles now? I would
love to hear about Kennet, but also any reviews of the company...
thanks,
me
I was very taken by this work (and by the outstanding performance by
Zoltan Solymosi... a somewhat recent addition to Royal Ballet).
Does anyone know anything about the production / performance history of
this ballet ?
I also was not familiar with Zoltan's work, but he is an excellent dancer.
I thought that Irek Mukhmudemov (sp?) was far stronger as an actor - he
really came across as a tormented person, but he was not quite as steady
in the dancing area. However, it's a killer part for a man - he's on stage
practically the whole time and has all these intricate and death-defying
pas de deux with several women.

I remember seeing a documentary about the creation of Mayerling, which
would have been a while ago. I'm not sure where you could find this tape
now, but it would probably answer many of your questions if you could get
a hold of it.
I actually would have liked to see Sleeping Beauty instead, but this was a
very good showcase to show their dramatic talents. The dancing was
excellent, but I think people got lost in the storyline - at the first
intermission, a lot of people seemed to be absorbed in their program!

Andrea, Idanced for ten years with the Feld Ballet in NY. While I was no
star I had a very good career. I have some fun stories like when we
danced at City Center in NY and had a streeker come right up on stage in
the middle of a pas de deux I was dancing with Christine Sarry. It was
quite a moment and hard to explain on-line but was an experience I won't
forget. Being a dancer in a ballet company in Ny is sometimes very hard
but it also has a special satisfation that feels as if time stands still
when one has a performance that goes just right.
Take care,
Footstep (Jeff Satinoff)
