I'm hoping that someone can help me with, or just comment on the
quality of comic book art work in general. I posted under MARVEL because
thats what i collect (could be any ).
I started collecting comics about 14 years ago 1978-1983 and found
the art work to be good but not that good. I found that most if not
all of the comics published in the 60's and early 70's (MARVEL) had
very good art work. Recently a comic book store open near me and I
started collecting again. When looking through some of the titles:
Fantastic Four, Siver Surfer, Hulk, X-Force, X-Men Etc...
I found no comparison to the comics of the past. Infact some titles-were
just plan BAD.

Maybe I'm to picky, I dont know???

P.S. Infinity G was great.!!!!!!!

Well, you just don't like the McFairlaine/Leifeld/Lee art
that's hot these days (I know I murdered the spelling on the names).
I'd give Hulk a try. I picked it up after hearing all the good things
about it on the net and never regretted it. I really like the art too
(what don't you like about it). I can understand why you wouldn't like
the new Brat Pack of artists at Marvel. I don't think they're that
awe-inspiring myself (tho I do like Lee's work a bit, but it'll never
compare to Perez, IMHO).

Well, part of the change in the late 80's was due to the departure
of Jim Shooter who had very specific ideas about layout and story construction.
He attempted to inflict a "house style" on the company and was fairly
successful at it. In that era, I dont think Lee, Mcfarline or Liefeld
would have been allowed to draw in the style they do now. If you want to
know what Shooter does not like, take a look at some of the Gene Day
Master of Kung Fu issues. If you want to see what shooter thinks is
"good" art, look at either secret wars series.

I dont think that most of it is "bad" so much as its a different style
and it takes some getting used to. (except for Fantastic Four and Thor
which are done in a horrible mock-Kirby style).

As far as the 60's-early 70's having "very good" art, I can agree
in part but there were also some terrible artists producing for marvel
at that time also.

So far as I can tell, neither Thor nor the Fantastic Four look in any way
like a Kirby style. Granted, it might be my sentimentality, but I like the
FF as it stands now, original team back in action, going on interplanetary
and interdimensional jaunts, and leaving the CRIMEFIGHTING to every other
jamoke in New York city. DeFalco is right in putting the FF back into
cosmic scale adventures (although a Miracle on Yancy Street was also a nice
touch). There's only so many times you can stomp on Doctor Doom before it
gets repetitive (especially since he's recently played tag with Spiderman
and the Avengers). The artist may not be a Steranko or an Adams, but
he is good, and they do look a hell of a lot better than the stupid 76-80's
Fantastic Four, before Byrne got into the artwork. (Then he got into the
story and added She-Hulk, which wasn't bad, but it left the Thing to be
drawn by -I think- Rick Butler who did a crappy job on that series.)

I've just re-started collecting the Fantastic Four, and have recently picked up
a bunch of She-Hulk issues with a bunch of fragmented storylines, a couple
Simonsons, and just recently, the last seven or so issues of the Four as
they stand now, and should always stand. As a family.

The new Thor is also pretty good, but I think the colorists on both series
are the ones who're really bad, not the artists.

Doug.

Who? What? Karen, is that you?
Uhm, Mr. Murdoch, you just grabbed my breasts.
Oh, geez, sorry Ms. Walters. I didn't see you there.
