I just received a copy of the CD version of Sonny Stitt's sessions with
Bud Powell and J.J. Johnson from 1949-50. I hadn't paid attention to
the cover when I ordered it--I just thought it was an abstract design,
maybe rocks in a stream or something. But on seeing the actual cover,
with its startling cartoon image of attacking birds, I knew only one
man could be responsible for those hand-talons--Mad's maddest artist,
Don Martin.

Don Martin was one of the best of all time. With his unique
sensibility and style, he may have been the first "modern" comic
artist; I'm sure he inspired a host of artists who came later. Just
seeing those birds made me break out in the biggest smile of the day.
Thanks for sharing.

Cool. Seems influenced by Scarfe. but you are right: it's all in the
pinkies.
