June 10 begins a 12-week sabbatical for Garry Trudeau and Doonesbury (for those of you keeping score, it's sabbatical #4). Most papers will run Doonesbury reruns during this time but some newspapers will want to use this time to try out new strips.

I expect the Tampa Bay Times to continue running Doonesbury. Not sure about the Tampa Tribune (which ran "Red & Rover" during "Doonesbury"'s last sabbatical in 2008).

The New York Daily News (which never runs repeat strips explaining the lack of "Get Fuzzy" strips as detailed in this group) definitely will not run Doonesbury. Whether they try out a new strip or not is anyone's guess.

If your newspaper is running Doonesbury or auditioning new strips please post here.

The Washington Post is replacing Doonesbury with one of its own.
Fort Knox, from the Washington Post Writers Group, will run in
Doonesbury's spot until Trudeau returns with new strips:

The Yakima (Wash.) Herald-Republic will also replace Doonesbury
starting tomorrow. But the link keeps timing out at the moment, so
I don't know what strip they're running in Doonesbury's spot.

Now that I can see the Yakima post, they'll be running a few strips in place of Doonesbury. It starts with Pearls Before Swine.

More Doonesbury News.

The Duluth News Tribune is not running Doonesbury. It usually runs in their Editorial page. It won't be replaced.

http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/269484/group/Opinion/

Elsewhere.

The Chicago Tribune has replaced Doonesbury with Animal Crackers.

The New York Daily News isn't running Doonesbury but did not replace it. The Daily News is down two comics this week with "Get Fuzzy" in reruns.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is running two strips in place of Doonesbury (They've dropped Blondie in the interim). Right now, the choices are Frazz and Dogs of C-Kennel.

Doonesbury is still running in the following papers: Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Orlando Sentinel.

I'll check more when I come back from work later.

The Rochester NY /Democrat and Chronicle/ is running Doonesbury reruns,
at least this AM.

The Times of Trenton (NJ) is running The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee,
which has
been their standard Doonesbury replacement for at least a couple
years.

The (Portland) Oregonian will be running the reruns, and put a notice
about the hiatus on the front page of their Living section (where the
comics are carried).

The Miami Herald is (so far, anyway) running the reruns, and AFAIK no
comment about the hiatus has been made in the paper.

The Ventura County (CA) Star has replaced Doonesbury with Candorville
during this hiatus.

I don't think this is an audition, though, more of replacing it with
what some might consider just another liberal comic strip to run in that
spot (they normally run Doonesbury and MF at the bottom of the editorial
page).

The Buffalo News is running the repeats. I also notice they raised
their price to $1, unless the box I bought it from was run by a
dishonest paperboy :)

Stone Soup rather than Doonesbury Flashbacks.

To the south The Modesto Bee has put
Big Nate in Doonesbury's spot.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch appears to be carrying the reruns without
comment. (I'm visiting my parents there at the moment.)

No, Blondie's still there...they've moved it from its usual second spot on the right hand page to a spot near the bottom of the left-hand page.

Philadelphia Inquirer Comic Strip Index

Here is what the comics looked like when the last original Doonesbury ran

Page 1
Pickles
Beetle Bailey
Baldo
Funky Winkerbean
Get Fuzzy
Zits
The Piranha Club
Edge City
Baby Blues
Mutts
Peanuts

Page 2
Left
Doonesbury
Blondie
Dustin
Jump Start
Sherman's Lagoon
Pearls Before Swine

Right
Family Circus Dennis The Menace (small size)

Now Wednesday

I looked at the Inquirer via Press Display. Since Doonesbury went on sabbatical Blondie was pre-empted Monday but Blondie was in the paper Tuesday and Wednesday replacing Baby Blues. I wonder if the original plan was to drop Blondie only to have her readers e-mail nasty complaint letters.

Bloomington (IL) Pantagraph

Peoria (IL) Journal Star

are both running the Doonesbury daily reruns with no comment. (Neither
ever makes notice of the other times the strip is rerun, so I guess
they're consistent.) Neither runs the Sunday.

San Francisco Chronicle is doing reruns...they seem to be almost randomly chosen. They also provided no explanation for why they were doing this.

In article <3e8c57bc-741e-42b2...@googlegroups.com>,
I don't think the local paper, the Record, ever ran it. It's probably
way too American to be seen as a viable strip for Waterloo County.

(They very annoyingly dropped Rip Kirby on a cliff-hanger, just as someone
was pointing a pistol at the back of his head)
