I grew up in Carmel and loved his cartoons in the Pine Cone every week.
There came a time when the Pine Cone decided his price was too high
(he may have wanted a raise?) and stopped carrying his cartoons, and
there was a huge backlash from readers that Wanted Their Bill Bates
Cartoon Dammit and they came to an agreement and his cartoons returned
to the paper.

It's a shame his cartoons didn't get wider syndication.
