I recommend Newsguy without hesitation. As a plus, they are offering
former Comcast Usenet users an extra month of free service when they
switch.

If you are feeling generous, please reference me [same detox665, only
at newsguy.com instead of hotmail]....or any other racs Newsguy
customer [I'm not greedy, but would like to see someone get the
credit]....if you go that direction as Newsguy offers a bonus for
referrals.

Well, I use the combo of Free Agent (ver. 1.93/32.576; you may have
to look for that one, the current one can be a mess) and
Individual.net . . .:
They do charge, but it's only 10 Euros a year, and no binaries;
more than enough to satisfy me!
individual.net has been recommended elsethread, and has a good
reputation. It's cheap, too.
NewsGuy has also been recommended, and has a more mixed reputation.
I would add panix.com for your consideration. $100 per year for shell
access to all sorts of stuff. If you don't know what shell access is,
or don't care, their NNTP service is robust, quick and reliable, and
probably worth the full price just on its own. And Panix will never
never never never abandon Usenet just because some scumbag politician
threatens to call them out as child pornographers for carrying alt.*.
(No, I am not making that up.)

I use that server as well. I convinced IT here to give it a port in the
firewall. There are some free servers that aren't too bad (also text
only), like http://motzarella.org
For people who want some binary access, a block account is a good deal.
You buy a chunk of bandwidth at very reasonable prices, and use it
until it's gone. Unless you're getting TV shows from multimedia groups
or something, then a few gig will last a long time. Here's one such
outfit:

Newsguy.
Not free, but in the main, very good service. Teranews if you absolutely
must have free, but it sucks ..
I've used individual.net since Roadrunner dropped Usenet. Works great,
the price is right (even at current exchange rates), and I can read news
from anywhere (except behind our corporate firewall).

Yet another vote for individual.net - I've used them for a number of
years (since _my_ (rinky-dink) ISP also dropped Usenet).

I should remark that I had a bit of difficulty paying - one of the
options didn't work at all and the other (PayPal) didn't work at first
because by default I was routed to the German PayPal site, which did not
recognize my existing PayPal account.
I don't remember what fiddling around resolved the issue, but it wasn't
rocket science.
I have been happy for years and years with the newsfeed here at rahul.net,
but the way I use it may not be for you: I read via tin on my shell
account (rahul.net is one of the dwindling number of ISPs that offer shell
accounts) and switch over to Goofle Froups whenever GUI stuff is required.
A bare-bones shell account will run you about $20 a month.

Shouldn't that be Foofle Froups?

Of courfe it should. Forry.
Ditto, ditto. I have both individual.net and newsguy.com, and for some
reason the former penetrates my workplace firewalls much better, while the
latter is fine for home and includes binary groups, which the former does
not. But who reads binaries at work? And Newsguy sends friendly emails about
bonus bandwidth earned, and I have found them prompt and responsive about
downtime complaints, very user-friendly.
Both are cheap and reliable. Individual.net is a slight hassle to set up, at
least when I did, because (I believe) they demanded a bank account number
and, if I recall correctly, a non-free email address -- but the service has
been almost completely flawless for quite a few years.
When Earthlink dropped its usenet service, abruptly and without explanation
or apology (or price reduction), I impulsively called them and candidly
advised that I despised Earthlink for doing that, but I am not sure, from
his reaction, that the Indian gentleman understood the meaning of the word
despise. Anyway, I think you'd be happy with either individual or newsguy.

That was not my experience. You can set up credit-card payment through
a third-party service. I use the same Yahoo account as is on this
message.
Supposedly my service ends tomorrow. See you on the other side!

=v= Huh? I'm using nntp.earthlink.net right now!
<_Jym_>
Oh noes!
I use Xnews, which I find just dandy, and as far as a feed, when my own
ISP's feed goes down (which it does once in a while) I use AIOE.org
which provides usenet feed completely free and carries r.a.c.s. They seem
to be some kind of non-profit collaborative usenet project based in
Italy. If they don't carry a newsgroup you read, they say to email them
and they'll add it. (No binary groups.)
Git yerself set up stat!

Both free, both good.
Thanks again, to you, Ronniecat, and everyone else. As of Monday morning, I
still have service through Comcast. Maybe they forgot to throw the big
switch marked "Shut Down Usenet." We'll see how long the ride lasts.
Brian F.

Glad to see you're back!
It may end up like my ISP - they still carry a usenet feed, but when it
goes out for a day or two every blue moon and I email they reply that
it's "not a supported service" - meaning it's way way down on their list
of priorities. When that happens I switch to aioe.org until they're back
up.
Huzzah! Teranews has not allowed posting for several weeks, and our
extremely tight budget can't justify paying even five bucks a month for
what basically amounts to a chat room... but aioe looks like just the
thing for those need-to-hang-with-my-racs-buds blues.

Five a month is too much. Either http://news.individual.net at 10
euro/year or a block account are better than that. Of course, aioe is
free (although I've heard some stories of problems with posts not
making it to some other news services). http://motzarella.org is
another fairly well regarded free solution.
