I'm actually not sure whether I want this to be a splendid
little one-day page or the start of a new story:

http://www.chron.com/apps/comics/showComick.mpl?date=20081020&name=Crankshaft

Although it's probably dangerous to let Tom Batiuk wield a
gun anywhere near his player-characters.

Either way, it was my forehead-slapper of the day . . .

And the story is carrying on. Also, apparently, Crankshaft
does his banking in 1978. (Maybe I'm a little too electronically
connected to care since I last saw my passbook about fifteen years
ago and three bank accounts ago.)

Crankshaft is in his 80s. Yes, people that age still use passbooks.

You're right, of course, and yet I think I'm right as well.

Not too many of them, I'd think. Most large banks (at least Bank of
America, Wells Fargo, and Citi) don't offer them any more, and for the
most part haven't for a long time - they became too expensive. A few
bigger chains still offer them, at least in some regions (for example,
Wachovia does/did in south Florida, but whether they continue to as part
of Wells Fargo is to be seen). It is possible that they are more widely
found in smaller/local banks, but with bank consolidation, those aren't
found too much in bigger cities any more. Perhaps private banks, but I
doubt Crankshaft is banking at one of those...
