Here's an interesting article from the Peterborough
Examiner. The money shot imo is this paragraph:

"When it came to finances, for example, she had entrusted everything to
her husband and was shocked to discover, in the days following his departure,
that her bank accounts were empty. Suddenly, the cartoonist whose strip
appears in more than 2000 newspapers around the world, the Gemini Award
winner and Pulitzer Prize nominee, and the first female to ever win the
prestigious Reuben Award from the U. S.-based National Cartoonists Society,
didn't have enough cash to buy groceries."

Is that why she hasn't ended the strip?

That explains a lot as to why she isn't retiring.

Doesn't mean broke, but it sure means set back hard.

So ... here's a look at the ol' Canadian dictionary, and there are two
words right next to each other:

Corbeil: Where Lynn Johnston lives
Corbeau: What I will be having for dinner now, please.

A few months ago, pretty much the same thing happened to Maritza
Campos. Is this going to become a trend among women cartoonists? If
Cathy Guisewite's next, it'll be the "AAACK!" heard 'round the world!

Methinks the cure for this is a lawyer, a forensic accountant, and a
visit to a judge. Not keeping the strip going.

A. You don't know what happened.

B. There's no crime involved in removing money from a joint account if
you are one of the people named on the account.

C. I don't know if you've ever been divorced, but sometimes you need
to move forward instead of picking at the scabs.

D. You don't know what happened. See (C)

A: None of us know what happened.

B: Not stating a crime occurred, but assuming Canadian divorce laws are
similar, bank accounts are a factor in dividing assets. If she has taken
it public, presumably she feels the division was inequitable, and should
have contested the matter. Once the judge signs off, reopening things is
a lot harder, but not always impossible.

C. No disagreement there. Never been divorced, but have known plenty who
were, and have the soggy shoulders to prove it. But is publicly dissing
the ex about money moving forward? Just sayin'.

D. Other than third-hand, none of us will ever know the whole story, and
I don't think her ex is talking to reporters. I have no real heartburn
with her continuing the strip, I guess. If it helps her financially and
mentally, more power to her. But sympathy for her personal trauma is a
lousy selling point for glorified re-runs. (And I do feel sympathy, as I
would for anyone who had their world turned upside down. But even now,
she probably has more money than I ever will.) I am curious how many
papers will end up keeping the strip in six months or a year, absent any
new story to follow.

Exactly. I know people who have been through personal trauma and
tough times, that doesn't mean that whatever crappy 8mm reel one of
them might slap together deserves to displace "Burn After Reading"
from its screen down at the local multiplex.

Also, I don't have to know exactly what the two of them were screaming
at each other in the bedroom to know that you won't generally get away
with emptying the bank accounts when you walk out of a marriage. No,
not in Canada, either. The laws about division of assets are pretty
straightforward (even if the practice isn't, always).

These events aren't an excuse to zombify the strip, but i
can see where they might be reasons she wanted to do so.
Income, continuity in her own life, a desire to rewrite the
past, good reasons, bad reasons, but reasons nonetheless.

I don't think the newruns are being sold as "Poor Lynn, let's
help her by letting a bad idea go forward." When a
cartoonist is as successful as Lynn is, it's a simple
dispassionate business decision. "She has a huge fan base.
Market wisdom says it could be a success."

They expected a hit from _Ishtar_ too, but that doesn't
refute my point.

And maybe it will be a hit, but the newruns aren't working for
me. They're weakened by my constant awareness that i
already know where these characters' lives are going. An
unknown future that i follow them into is a big part of my
interest in following a family saga strip.
