One of the stock character types in the sports stories
stocked in the library of my two-room rural school was the one-eyed
coach whose promising career in hockey was cut short when a puck
took his eye out. I assume thse stories were pre-Jacques Plante.

Even harder than hockey pucks - those deep black bowling balls are made out of
rubber.
