You are absolutely correct. I screwed up. Cut and pasted the wrong line
there. I'm going to collect the "errata" for this year's Squiddies, and see
if I can get Todd VerBeek to fix it on the website.

Personally, I think "Doonsbury" is a bit of a lame choice, myself. I voted
for Ruben Bolling ("Tom The Dancing Bug"). But--other than my one vote--I
don't vote them; I just count them.
Johanna and I briefly discussed suggesting that the "Best Political
Cartoonist" category be eliminated because there seemed to be no great
interest in the subject matter by a majority of the voters in previous
years. I believe we decided that taking out would be unfair to the regulars
of rec.arts.comics.strips, where editorial cartoons are on-topic, and
presumably discussed.

At the risk of sounding like I'm trying to force open a closed vote, did
anyone vote for Volume 10 of LW&C besides me, or did they just vote
generically for LW&C and this get assigned? I only asked because (in the
only real research I did for the vote other than finding out if my
memories of a TOP 10 comic in 2001 were accurate) I found a second TPB of
the series that I debated casting my vote for, and was surprised to not
see it on the list (I forget which that was right now).

Happy to oblige.
Eric Shanower does Age of Bronze, a nice little retelling,
reinterpretation of Homer's epics as published -- I suppose
sporadically would be the best way to describe its shipping
-- by Image Comics.
Darick Robertson is probably most famous for his
collaboration with Warren Ellis on Transmetropolitan,
although he's also done projects involving Spider-Man, New
Warriors, Fury, among others.
Mike Kunkle is the creative force behind Herobear and the
Kid.
Ryan Sook has most recently been doing the art chores for
Mike Mignola's BPRD: Hollow Earth mini-series -- an
excellent job he's doing as well -- as well as having just
finished a stint on JM DeMatteis' spiralling storybook
called Spectre -- again an excellent job he did of it as
well.
Tan Eng Huat is apparently the "hot thing" according to John
Arcudi and whoever edits Doom Patrol -- the book that Tan
pencils -- although I fail to see it myself. He's not bad,
I'll give him that, but he still needs a little growth.

I think there was a definite interest this year, for very specific and
obvious reasons. How long before people stop caring again, who knows? I
think the 9-11 fallout has continued producing enough noteworthy material
that it will still be a worthwhile category for next year at least.

Technically, it's a retelling of the Trojan War, with Homer only being one
of many, many resources, including literature, history, and archaeology.

I voted for him, even though I dropped the series after 4 issues. The
story couldn't hold me, but damn were his pencils good (the first issue
being pretty uneven.)

Journalist Joe Sacco made an extended visit to the Contested Area, then
conveyed the stories of various people he met there in comic book format.
It tends to be pro-Palestinian, as the title would suggest, but not to the
point of trying to cover up their flaws. It's quite powerful, even if you
disagree with his position.

Yes. DETECTIVE COMICS has featured a back-up story ever since the post "No
Man's Land" bat-titles relaunch. Thus it qualifies as an anthology.

In fairness to PALESTINE, I believe Sacco wrote and drew it before the
Palestinians began their suicide bomb attacks.

It predates the Second Intifada. The First Intifada ran from 1987 to
1993; Sacco's _Palestine_ is based on his trip to the Levant in 1992,
and was originally published between 1993 and 1995, I believe.
