I spent some time on AOL earlier this afternoon in an online chat with
Tom McCraw & Jeff Moy. They were annoying coy about upcoming plans for the
book. After donating $6 to the cause, I can only pass on a few tidbits:

Spoilers?

- If I read Tom's doublespeak correctly, Star Boy will be the next
Legionnaire. Whoever it is, he or she will have a cape. (But admit it,
wouldn't Tenzil look great with a cape?)

- No immediate plans for Jan, but the "Alchemist" name isn't highly regarded
by Tom

- No immediate plans for Dirk

- Chuck isn't being dismissed as a possibility. Tentative new codename is
Rebound. (Rather than Kurt Busiek's Image-like suggestion, "Deathboing")

- Tom attempted to put off speculation that Zoe was somehow involved with
the Emerald Eye. But his statement was rather suspicious, something to the
effect that they'd never said that Zoe was tied to the Eye. They didn't say
that she wasn't, either. Read into that one what you will.

- Jeff Moy is going to miss two straight issues of Legionnaires in the near
future. He's not doing #25, but he had just finished #26 today. (For those
of you who wonder how far ahead these things work.)

- Moy's also doing a Spark pin-up page for the Legionnaires annual

AOL hosts Legion chat every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Eastern time. Tom said
he'd be there again next week, and I'd be happy to ask any question that
you'd all like me to. Nevertheless, I wouldn't expect much information to
be shared candidly.

I forgot to mention that Tom confirmed that Gim is the Martian rep. No
response as to whether his parents' ties to Earth still exist post-reboot.
He wasn't being rude and ignoring the question, but merely doing his best to
keep up with the questions that were being rapid-fired at him. He missed the
Earth-ties question in all likelihood.

"No immediate plans" means a good sign to me. I kinda think that they (LSH
mag. team) are rushing off too much by letting in more and more characters.

They forget the whole DCU continuity (what to do with the "Time and Time
Again" milestone?) by building up inconsistencies.

It is comics you say? I want a good story! Making Superboy a punk is
already bad enough.

NO! He MUST be called "Deathboing!" :)

I'm still peeved that nobody asked about Wildfire....

On the other hand, Mark Waid wrote down David Goldfarb's suggestion that
the Trommites were actual alchemists and have a magic based power that
gets around some of the science problems of the power. This was at last year's
San Diego Con.

Kurt apparently was also suggesting that if established Legionnaires
came back in non-humanoid form, he wanted Val to be Kung Fu Lizard of Death.

"But it isn't a nominee because:
1) It would be redundent.
2) It was only an auxiliary of the Legion of Superheroes
3) DC admitted its existence in Who's Who, and
4) There are a lot of humorless Legion fans out there, and some of them
probably have guns." --World's Worst Comics Awards

I agree -- I definitely want Jan back in the Legion but not with that
name. Alchemist just seems too archaic for the 30th century. You might
as well call him Philosopher's Stone (actually, "Stone, Philosopher
Stone" has a certain ring to it). Why not just drop the Lad and call him
Element or Elemental (it works for Chameleon). And while we're on the
topic of names, I have never gotten used to calling Tinya Apparition or
Gim Leviathan. Have "Phantom" and "Colossus" been trademarked by other
companies? What about Phantoma or Phantasma or Colossian then? Also, I
have never been able to figure out why Laurel's code name is Andromeda.
Is Daxam in the Andromeda Galaxy? What is it supposed to signify?

Uh, yes... The Phantom is this purple guy who hangs out in the jungle,
and Colossus is a russian mutant...

Or "Colosseum Boy" from the Roman Legion of Super Heroes some
friends of mine developed. Of course, the ability to turn into a
stadium isn't the world's most versatile power. (Conversely,
Triplicate Girl's counterpart, Cohort Girl, was more useful than her
original, having the power to turn into three _hundred_ identical
people. :-) )

Also, I
>have never been able to figure out why Laurel's code name is Andromeda.

It's been said, but I _really_ hope that gets reconsidered
before it goes into the comic. Given that the Milky Way has 100
billion stars, having it extend to Andromeda makes the UP way too large--
either it has too many planets, or it's too diffuse. (Of course, it
could be declared that there's some sort of natural space warp a la
Star Trek DS9 which makes Daxam's system effectively nearby, even
though it's actually very, very far away in interstellar terms.)

I still like the Saturnalia Girl (ability to make one think they're drunk
and/or hungover) addition I came up with to these. Of course, they were
completely ignored when I sent 'em in with the infamous Moon physics letter
and updated Bizarro LSH (and of that, the one I thought best,
Anti-Matter-Vomiter Lad, also didn't get printed).
