This is not a review.
A strong issue undermined by a ridiculously provocative and silly letter
column. Is Waid leaving or did Friedman just help out for this one issue?
Waid has done wonderful things for this title, and I hope he sticks around.
The art was wonderful. $1.75 US, $2.50 CAN, #1.25 UK. anyway:
spoilers ho :)
Alright, a nice solid set up issue.
Dave van Domelen was right about the Mirror Master, butr since demons are
involved, I wonder if it might not be the first Mirror Master. That would
be intriguing. The last time Flash faught a dead guy, was when Barry Allen
took on the Topp.
They also seem to be setting up some explanation for howq Wally came back
from the Speed Force, which is late but would be nice. The bit about coming
back from Heaven seems to indicate that he didn't want to badly enough.
I want to see Linda and Wally married within the year. I doubt I'll get
that wish, but I still want it.
I liked the casual mention of Dick "Nightwing" Grayson when Wally was
trying to detective work.
Now, here's a question. Wally can not only run really fast, he can make
Linda run really fast. Are they going to book their asses out of that
building at Mach 5 before the demons can blink, or are we going to get a
fight scene? :)

Hmmmm....is any one but me thinking that Linda is behaving like a
real butthead here? Given the explanation she's given, I think it's a
real lack of motivation for Linda to be so distant [Self-centeredness? If
you came back from the brink of certain death, wouldn't YOU be into
yourself just a bit?].
On the other hand, if Waid explains this as LINDA being self-centered
and a bit jealous that she wasn't centerstage in Wally's life, I might
buy it as two characters being REALLY alike, but I dunno.....

Oh....do you have to ask......

Well, I think you took the letter col a bit personally, although I admit
I was a little taken aback by Augustyn's abruptness and the way he
singled out the "nitpicker." Mind you, I don't disagree :), I was just
surprised to read it.

Friedman helped out on #102 as well. He's assisting on this entire arc
(through #105), as Mark was a tad swamped. Mark isn't terribly fond of
#102 and 103, by the way, but says the story gets better, and he's back
up to full speed (so to speak) in #106.

Hmm. I didn't read it that way. For one, Wally's already a well-
established butthead. :) A nice guy in general, don't get me wrong, but
he hasn't quite gotten the hang of things in the relationship department,
as Mark has often shown (one of the best aspects of his writing, to me;
one can be a hero and a jerk at the same time, but the jerkiness of one's
personality doesn't necessarily factor into the moral rightness of one's
heroism the way it does with other "heroes" I could mention). And he
came back from the brink of certain death FOR HER. The end of issue #101
has him sharing the speed force with HER. Then all of a sudden he can't
sit still and goes gallavanting off, leaving her practically in mid-
sentence as she's trying to explain something to him. Fidgety is one
thing, but Wally still has a lot to work on in this aspect of his life,
and I don't blame Linda one bit for being frustrated with him.
And she's trying to do her job, as well as trying to do right by a man
she once loved (although I *do* blame her for not revealing THAT little
secret to Wally - you are certainly on the mark with your observation
that they're more alike in their jerkiness sometimes than either would
care to admit), plus she's caught in a dangerous situation with a man who
didn't think before he tripped the alarms (which he could obviously see,
as could we, and why he didn't speed around them I'll never know)...
Yeah, I'd say it wasn't Linda's best day. I'd cut her some slack.
Actually, I'm thinking more of the rift that began previous to
#101, which to my mind, is not well motivated. It just seems Linda just
plain GAVE up with Wally. As you said, Wally gave up Heaven for her...and
now she's keeping him at arm's length??? I don't think you can blame this
on Wally...
Can I blame him for not bringing her in on the decision to "give up heaven"
in the first place? :)
(I quit reading after that, so ignore me, I'm just causing trouble.)

I misspoke (mistyped?). It's #103 and #104 (the next one) that Mark
thinks sucked. He just E-mailed me last night, and practically begged me
not to buy FLASH #104. Whenever I see an entreaty like that from the
writer of the book, I start to worry... :)
