Exhibitions of the work of Carol Swain, other British women,
and the 'Breakfast Project', with contributors from around the
world, will represent women comic artists.

European and Scandinavian artists will make up the International
exhibition, with a selection of work showing the diversity and
breadth of the comics medium.

Workshops, films, music, events, publishers' stands, education projects
and visiting artists will add to the festival atmosphere.

NEWCASTLE INTERNATIONAL COMIC ART FESTIVAL (NICAF)

Newcastle's Contribution to Visual Arts UK
------------------------------------------

A major festival showcasing Comic Art is planned as Newcastle's
contribution to
Visual Arts UK, which takes place from 10th to the 16th of June 1996.
This has
been core funded by Newcastle City Council.

During that same week, Newcastle will host Euro 96, with European
football
matches at St. James Park, and the Comic Art Festival will add an extra
dimension to these celebrations. The Festival will provide an exciting
visual
experience for people in the region and for the many thousands of
overseas
visitors who will be in the City.

A full programme of exhibitions and events, including seminars,
workshops,
films, publishers stands, and education projects is now in olace. There
will
also be artists visiting from Britain and Europe during Festival weekend.

The Concept
===========

To showcase and celebrate the art of comics
-------------------------------------------
Festival exhibitions will feature original art work by
British and European artists, presented within three
dimensional interpretations of the comic strip ideas
and characters. Each exhibition will be designed
by a professional theatre designer. This is a culturally
innovative and highly successful model developed
and used at the major European Festivals of Comic Art.

Exhibitions will run from 1Oth June for at least a week.
--------------------------------------------------------
Workshops for young people by working comics writers
and artists will be provided over the Festival weekend,
some of these run by a French group under the auspices
of the Council of Europe and their Youth initiative against
racism, xenophobia, anti-semitism and intolerence.

Seminars and talks by artists and publishers about
censorship, comic art history, disability and the comics,
and other topics will be on the agenda for more serious
students of the medium.

Artists from Britain, Scotland, Europe and the Nordic
countries will be represented at the Festival, too, and
publishers will be on site to sell comics.

The annual gathering of women comic artists will move
from its regular London spot in Covent Garden to a
Newcastle venue.

The Venues
