I've always wondered about the salaries of some of the people in the
industry today. Does anybody have a general idea of how much the average
writer or average artist gets paid for a 30-page book? How about a
letterer? How much does a fantastic writer such as Gaiman get paid for
writing an issue of THE SANDMAN? How about a big name like Todd
McFarlane? What are his paychecks like? Any ideas?

More than one person has told me that the minimum page rate for an
inker at Marvel is $75/page. Unfortunately, that's all I know since
all I do is ink... (hoping to get an assignment at Marvel or DC!)

Over the summer I went to the Jim Shooter how to create a comic book
thing in Nashville. If I remember correctly he said that the average
writer makes something along the lines of $75 to $125 a page, where
the average artist gets something along the lines of $125 to $200 a
page. As for specific people, I do not have any idea, but I'm sure it
is more than that for McFarlane and Gaiman.

I'd think it's something really really huge especially for those Image people.
But those at the Image panel won't openly say how much they make off every
comic just because they insist that they are not doing it for the money. and
the amount that they make might make people think otherwise. But think about
this.... I heard that Todd was getting nearly $1000/page for Spiderman or to
leave Spiderman and work on whatever he worked on after Spidey. And with Image,
even if he just get 10 percent of the cover price...multiply that by 450,000
copies per issue. Well, you tell me, how much he makes per issue.

A friend of mine did some inking work for DC this summer on one of
the BLOODLINES annuals and he received about $75 per page. I would
assume that the artist got paid much more than the inker on the book.
Also, the same friend is doing work on FLARE for Heroic Publishing and is
getting $50/page to ink that book.
I hope this sheds some light on salaries for artists.
