I'm seeing tons of examples of sequential art throughout early art, even
word ballons in on Greek vases and I'm eating it up. On the one hand, I
know sequential art has a long history, but it's still interesting to
actually see specific pieces and how they fit overall into art history.
My question is, has anyone tackled a real history of sequential art, not
just comics, dating all the way from the dawn of art, be it in a
book/school course/website or paper? I'm looking for something that really
concentrates on early art. Something that covers Islamic or Asain art
would be cool too.

Scott McCloud covered the real early stuff a bit in Understanding Comics.
I'd check the bibliography for you, but my copy is on loan. You might try
e-mailing him on the subject.
Fred Schodt's Manga! Manga! has a breif history of Japanese sequential art
that starts in the 12th Century.

The author is David Kunzle, the books are _History of the Comic Strip_
vol 1 and 2. Very good and very thorough.
