an initial 70-0 score in favor of r.a.c.'s Black Ink Irregulars (this
year going under the name of the Space Canine Patrol Agency's Human
Auxillary to honor the theme of superteams...and to have the excuse to
chant the SCPA's cheer in unison) to win by a 135-125 margin. The Pros
needed to get both the final tossup and the associated bonus to win, which
they did. More details when I get home.

Now with the stat sheet in front of me...
The BII went off to a quick 70-0 lead by getting the first four tossups.
The PP came back, closing the gap to 80-50 at the tenth tossup mark (30
tossups and 20 bonuses had been prepared, and the match would end whenever
either set of questions was exhausted. At the tenth tossup, 8 bonuses had
been used).
At the 15th tossup, the score was 110 to 80 in favor of the BII, with 13
bonuses used. At the 20th tossup, the margin had closed to BII 115,
PP 110, with 17 bonuses used (an incorrect interrupt of a tossup resulted
in a 5 point penalty. Tossups and bonuses were worth 10 points each).
From there it went:

The final tossup was something like "In the Kree-Skrull War, who was the
head of the Alien Activities Commission?" with Kurt Busiek jumping in with
the correct answer of H. Warren Craddock. I'm blanking on what the final
bonus was.
There was one disputed bonus answer, which the BII gave and were ruled
correct on. But if anyone happens to have Avengers #83 handy and can say
who *in the story* were members of the Lady Liberators, we'd appreciate it.
Note: *Not* who are the members on the cover; the dispute is over whether
a certain non-cover character was a member in the story.

It should be noted that some of the Incorrect, no Interrupt responses were
joke answers when it was clear no one was going to buzz in with a correct
answer.
Overall, the team stats were:
BII: 9 tossups, 4 bonuses, 1 incorrect interrupt
PP: 11 tossups, 3 bonuses, 1 incorrect interrupt
Audience: 1 bonus
20 of 24 tossups were answered correctly, and 7 of 20 bonuses by the two
teams. Of special note was the audience member (whose name I didn't catch)
who successfully managed to name all six of the alternate Metal Men from
the School For Robots MM story, which neither of the teams could manage.
This brings the Pros up to a 5-2 winning margin over the seven years of the
contest, although it should be noted that save for last year's Kirby topic
match, the Pros have won all their matches by a single question's margin
or less (one year the match was tied in regulation, taking three tie-breaker
questions until there was a winner).
Next year's theme will be Pre-Crisis era Bad Guys.
As always, the match was a lot of fun, with plenty of bad jokes and funny
wrong answers given when a team didn't know the right answer. As usual,
there was a funny moment involving a question on Len Wein's work. One of
the first bonuses, which went to the BII, was who was the first villain
fought by the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Thanks to Len having used that
villain in the JLA-JSA story he wrote which brought back the SSoV, we
were able to recall it was the Hand...and explicitly thank Len for having
written that story :-). And thanks to Quizmaster Jim Hay for
putting up with us for another year.

recall, it was one of the ones I got.

The BII were correct. While the Invisible Girl does turn up in the artwork,
she's not a member of the Liberators. Nor is she the Invisible Girl -- she's
Jeanie Thomas in a Halloween costume.

Don't think so on the first, and I know it wasn't Scrounge as that had to
be a tossup. I recalled enough of the story to guess "Scrooge" before you
rang in with the correct "Scrounge" [for those wondering, it dealt with
the Teen Titans Christmas Carol story. I recalled enough that it was
a Scrooge like character and went with the straight name, while Kurt either
recalled the name or made the correct association via recalling the
story character owned a junkyard].

"Ebenezer Scrounge" was the tossup, which you got. "Machus and
Femizonia" sounds familiar as well.

I don't think so. Well, except for last year when Mark Waid was the only
person on the pro "team." (Which apparently will be the case again this
year as well.)

Third time in San Diego from what I recall; in the second match on Silver
Age only I answered all the fan team tossups, and in the pre-Byrne Superman
match Mark Waid answered all the pro team tossups (hey, when you're competing
against both Waid and Rich Morrissey on pre-Byrne Superman I can attest it's
a good feeling to manage to squeak in any responses on tossups).
And it should be noted that the stats are only for the tossups; since
consultation is allowed on bonuses, it's nigh impossible to keep track on
who got what on those, particularly for the other team. There was at least
one bonus where I initially thought the wrong answer and was corrected by
the other BII, and others where it was very much a group effort. It also
gets down to buzzer speed; I know David mentioned several times that he
was just behind me on hitting the buzzer.
Of course, there's also not been a Chicago contest that one could call a
close result or a fan win. :-)
