WHERE ARE THEY NOW: Carol Danvers, She-Thing, Patsy Walker
James
one of my favorite characters, Carol Danvers, has again been written out of the
Avengers. Is that true? Why did she leave? Where is she now?
Where is Patsy Walker now that the latest Defenders incarnation has folded?
I cannot for the life of me remember her name, but whatever happened to
She-Thing (formerly known as another Ms. Marvel, long red hair, ex-wrestler)?
The last time I remember seeing her, she had been mutated in some grotesque
form by Dr. Doom.

After "Red Zone," she took a job with Homeland Security. Honestly,
she's about the last character in the world I'd like to see written by
Chuck Austen, so it's probably just as well. At least she left the
team on good terms this time. She's also appearing in the Captain
America/Wolverine mini-series.

Presumably still with the Defenders. They didn't disband at the end
of the series, did they?

Warbird got pulled into a liason position with the military because of
her background and the nature of the threat the team was facing
alongside the US military. At storylines end, Carol was offered a
permanent position in some capacity in the military/government and
decided to take it with Cap's blessing.

Short Answer: Busiek brought her back.
Longer Answer: When the Avengers re-formed after Onslaught, Scarlet
Witch discovered that she could return Wonder Man from the dead for
short periods of time. She was pretty troubled by this, and on
Avengers Day (the anniversary of the team's founding), she visited her
old mentor, Agatha Harkness, to understand how she could suddenly do
this. Harkness explained that Wonder Man was clinging to life because
of his love for her, and that to restore him to full life, all Scarlet
Witch had to do was love him back. She also told Wanda that her
powers had grown again; this was the first time Busiek used the phrase
"chaos magic."
Meanwhile, Grim Reaper attacked the team with a new "Legion of the
Unliving"--seven dead Avengers, including Wonder Man Mockingbird, all
with axes to grind over how they were allowed to die. They attacked
the A-team, and defeated them fairly easily.
Scarlet Witch was ambushed upon her return to Avengers Mansion. Using
her chaos magic, she made contact with the core goodness of each of
the Unliving--reaching the part of them that made them Avengers in the
first place. Now free of the Grim Reaper's control, the dead Avengers
freed their living teammates and stood with them, now completely
restored to life, against the Reaper.
However, the other Unliving Avengers were dependent on Wonder Man's
undead status to exist on this plane. Scarlet Witch finally managed
to release her love for Wonder Man, which restored him to full life,
but also broke the link keeping the other Unliving Avengers "alive."
All six faded away; as she did, Mockingbird pleaded with the Avengers
to contact Hawkeye, saying that "He's got to....." Before she could
finish the sentence, she was gone.
Some months later, Hawkeye led the Thunderbolts into Mephisto's realm
(I don't remember how he figured out that Mockingbird was there). The
team encountered the usual difficulties in going to Hell, and
eventually recovered a female soul, completely shrouded from head to
toe. They returned to the Earth dimension, and unwrapped the woman,
expecting to see Mockingbird--but as it turned out, it was Patsy
Walker.

She got better in a Thunderbolts annual, I think. The T-bolts rescued
her from some underworld realm, with help from also-dead Mockingbird.
Next up was a mini-series by Steve Engelhart, where Patsy got a
short-lived new (and inferior) look and wrote a best-selling
autobiography, delightfully titled "Gidget Goes To Hell!" Then, she
hooked up with the Defenders after getting her back-from-the-dead
house in order.

dr strange/sub marnier/hulk and the silver surfer were freed from the "whatever
we are doing zap us all to the same place to fight what" curse. they were freed
by gaia/mother earth. as they were leaving captain america told them that if
they didn't anser of their actions they would never be trusted by the world
again. their reply was "big deal we are used to that. the team is disbanded
however hellcat(patsie)nighthawk and the valkrie aren't in a real hurry and
gaia gives nighthawk a ring. the ring has the power to even though they are
free if nighthawk even feels that they they must unite again (douptfull given
the low sales despite the fact that it had some fans) the ring will sumon them.

Last time I read Avengers, which was several months back, Warbird was on
the team.

Actuaally she joined the "Department of Homeland Security" at the end of
the Red Zone arc. She is no longer on the team.

After Sharon Ventura refused to betray the FF against Doom in #375, he
sent some of his agents to douse her with some kind of gas that
mutated her as you say. She went berserk and Reed had to put her in
a stasis chamber. She stayed that way until the Frightful Four busted
her out in an issue of FF Unlimited. She was bitter both about the
transformation and the FF's forgetting about her. She decided to join
up with the Frightful Four.
She is still with them when the Wizard decides that Wyatt Wingfoot's
tribe in concealing some kind of legendary treasure on their
reservation. This is FF#29, during Claremont's "Reed in Doom armor"
storyline. The FF, led by Reed/Doom come to rescue Wyatt. The Wizard
and the others surrender because they don't want to fight a Doom-led
FF. But the She Thing is still fighting mad since she thinks this is
the Doom that transformed her into the grotesque form. Wyatt calms
her down and offers her a home with the tribe. She hasn't been seen
since.

Her name was Sharon Ventura. The last time she has appeared that I
know of was Fantastic Four V3 29 as a member of the Frightful Four.
She may have appeared somewhere else but I am not aware of it

She's in the new Captain America/Wolverine/Warbird mini-series. I don't know
if the first issue is out yet, but your FLCS probably has a preview copy.

She was last seen in FF UNLIMITED, circa 1995, as a part of one of the
incarnations of the Wizard's Frightful Four.

WHEN are they going to give her her own book again and be done with
it? I've loved every incarnation of Carol Danvers, since the 70's.
Perhaps I should start the MCDFWWMMB - the Mad Carol Danvers Fans Who
