What has not been made clear is
a) who does currently own the rights, and
b) if the Dire Wraiths fit into the category of ROM or the Spaceknights.

I know of two such proposals, both apparently sheperded by Mark Bernardo, ex
Marvel editor and somtimes colorist, co-editor of Blaze of Glory.
The Joe Edkin/Leo Manco revival, which didn't have too many ties to the series,
since Edkin and Manco were able to convert it to a separate property and shop
it around, possibly as part of the DCU or a creator-owned title. It would have
taken more of a cyberpunk angle.
The Benny R. Powell (Warrior's Way) and Jim Calafiore revival, which was
reportedly in the drawing stages, but the dismissal of Bernardo and Tim Tuohy
killed the project, though I understand Ruben Diaz was working on it as well.
This would ahve taken a more comical/X-Filesish tone: Rom and Brandy discover
the Galadoran population was not wiped out and have been hiding underground. To
convince his people that it's okay to come up, he travles to earth and sets
himself up as a paranormal investigator.

The rights to ROM belong to the toy producers, Hasbro (Although I don't
think it has been used for a long time - wouldn't the trademark have lapsed
by now? What about the toy likeness?)
The Dire Wraiths are, and have always been, owned by Marvel. Only ROM
hasn't.

Really? When and where?

Just to make it clear, Hasbro did not make the Rom action figure. It
was created by Parker Brothers. Parker Bros. was later bought by Tonka,
who themselves were acquired by Hasbro in 1991.
As far as the trademark goes, IANAL, but the last time the trademark was
used was 1986, with ROM #75. I would think that over 10 years of
non-use would put it in jeapordy. *However*, IIRC, Parker Brothers owns
(or co-owns) the copyright on the ROM comics, so no one else will be
able to use his likeness (in armor, at least) for a long, long time.

As is proven by the appearance Volx in NEW WARRIORS (vol. 1) and the
fact that Marvel looked into producing a Dire Wraith action figure in
recent years. (See the sidebar to the Rom article in ToyFare #15, Nov
1998.)

Before you buy.
So this project is completely dead now due to lack of interest by
publishers?

I think you summarized too much. How does becoming a paranormal
investigator on Earth convince the Galadorians it's safe to return to
the surface of Galador???
BTW, one of last month's Marvel e-mail newsletter (The Mighty Marvel
Mailer), had an interview with editor Mike Marts. Here's the related
excerpt:
| MMM: Word has it that among your upcoming plans are Power Pack and
| Spaceknights projects. What can you tell us about these and any other
| projects that you have in store?
|
| Can't say much at this time, other than that both projects mentioned
| are"in the works."
It's not Rom, but it's the next best thing. I wonder if this would be
featuring the Spaceknights protecting Galador (which would certainly
mean an appearance by Rom, Humanoid 8) or others that never found their
way back? Or, as a third option, Spaceknights which got tired of
protecting Rom and Galador and went off to explore.
I'm not sure. Edkin and Manco may just publish it on their own. >I think you

I'm not sure. That's how Benny explained it to me. I'm probably forgetting
something. The funny part is Rom would sometimes get hired to investage stuff
WE thinkis normal in the MU, like the X-Manison, but Joe Average in the MU
would think is weird.
And there would be a backplot with the government screwing around with Dire
Wraith genetic material.

Well, it's not exactly ROM, buit the newest Newsarama says that a 5
issue mini of the SPACEKNIGHTS is in development. Said it was set in
the future of Rom's time. No creative team was mentioned yet.

Yes, he did. It was his last in-continuity appearance. (Until later
this year. Heh, heh.)

While it's not ROM exactly, I saw a newsblurb in Newsarama that a
SPACEKNIGHTS miniseries by Jim Starlin & Chris Babtista (sp?) is in the
works.

I think that was supposed to be a cute homage in the form of a bust.
There's really no way that Rick could have the armor.
