Kirsten Dunst is a good actress and has played good (and not so good) roles.
But there's been something bothering me about her as MJ, I as a sporadic
reader of Spider-Man comics. It's been something I've noticed in the trailer
and reemphasized in the movie:

It's in the eyes.

Despite who's she drawn by, one of the constants about Mary Jane, aside from
the red hair (which could have been redder, more like Alyson "Willow"
Hannigan of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, but that's a nit), and modern,
somewhat provocative, as the new Peter would put it, garments, the eyes . .
. the eyes are usually large and round. Kirsten's eyes are small, almost
beady--which is reinforced in that billboard ad. They're pretty but don't
match MJ from the comic.

The neighbor girl, "Glynnis" (sorry, JOAN OF ARCADIA fans would get the
reference) had the right eyes (a shade too slender for the role, but the
right eyes). In fact, Tobey's eyes are closer match considering how often he
is shown to be literally wide-eyed in the movie.

Oh and another MJ constant was her being more aggressive, having a take
charge persona. MJ in the movies was far too passive. Maybe they are basing
it on the Ultimate version of MJ or if this is part of the combining of MJ
with Gwen Stacy's persona and relation as Peter's first(?) love. I don't
know. As I said, I'm a sporadic reader of Spidey.

Anyway it's a minor gripe in an overall good movie (I coulda used a few less
over the top soapy moments of staaaaaaring betwixt Peter and MJ or of poor
unfortunate Peter always losing out, like JJJ, I wanted to call in a
violin).

P.S. A very nice touch was that we finally saw a REAL (small) apartment that
a POOR New Yorker would own instead of the huge studio apartments shown on
tv sitcoms for the past several decades (at least I think it's real given
I've never actually been to NY, much less NYC, but based on complaints from
actual NYers, the large apartments, even allowing for rent control are more
fantasy than a guy with spider powers).

LOL.....no, you're dead on target. The SRO that Peter lives in is
about what he'd be able to afford in the current housing market in
Manhattan.

Of course, he COULD find a share in one of the outer boroughs, where
the rents are lower, but that would involve a roommate........

I never really thought she was proper casting for MJ. Always got that
feeling that she was supposed to be some Gwen/MJ hybrid. But she has
really good chemistry with Tobey, so it hasn't really harmed the
flicks for me. Turned a weakness into a strength.

Who always thinks more Nikki Cox when he thinks MJ...

I understand that Alicia Witt was an early consideration for MJ, and I think it
was a mistake not to go with her.

Me, neither. But then, I guess it was always too good to be true that
Peter Parker, of all people, dated and married a supermodel... It's
funny how the comics are more realistic in some ways and the
are more realistic in others.

She was great on CYBIL, with the sarcastic wit and aggressive persona, large
eyes and red hair.

P.S. Btw, could we have ONE woman in SPIDER-MAN 3 who does NOT scream high
enough to make dogs bark and glass break?

Absolutely, I agree. I think Alicia is a very talanted actress.

You know who really would have made a great MJ?
A young Katherine Hepburn!

Uuuuhhhhh...
Anyway, I agree that Alicia Witt would probably... I mean definitly
fit the role better. I also would have liked to had Jessica Alba in
the role too. Drop dead gorgeous and the right amount of spunk.

I actually think the redhead from "That 70's Show" would have been
good, even if she'd have made a better Rachel/Jean Grey

And my 2p worth on Sue...they should have just gone for Elisha
Cuthbert (24) who IMO would have been perfect
