Sorry about the delay but I am somewhat behind on my reading.

Issue 612 is the part 1 of the "The Gaunlet" storyline and Marvel somehow
justified that it ought to cost a dollar more. The lead-in story was
awfully drawn but it's Norman Rockwell compared to the Black Cat
back-up/fill-in/waste of money. (It's Wacker that called this Black Cat
story in the letter column despite her only appearing on three pages.) The
"artist" JM Ken Niimura is THE worst artist I have ever seen and even with
his doing the lettering, it looks like he drew the whole thing during a long
bathroom break. I'd categorize his style and execution as "unpublishable."
Mr. Niimura displayed tremendous difficulties drawing straight lines and he
ought to purchase a ruler with the money he earned from this gig.
Everything just screams that he doesn't care and this is someone that should
be banned from the industry for life. In one panel he drew Black Cat with
an x (and only x) on her face.

Does anyone know if Niimura is Japanese? If so, there should only be one i
in his last name. Furthermoe, Japanese only has one first name so JM part
doesn't rhyme either.

I recall that there's a secondary Spidey title for inventory story and I am
offended that with so many artists seeking work, this guy got the plump gig.
The story, written by Joe Kelley, wasn't anything to write home about and
merely introduced one more love interest for Peter Parker.

Thrice-a-month Amazing Spider-Man has been a big bust and instead of
offering three times the story, we are getting three times the fillers.
Nothing remarkable ever takes place and I am still dinged nine to ten
dollars a month. They are using any artist they can churn out the pages
because of the deadlines and the whole "writing by committee" concept is
something that should not ever be repeated. Recently they had an issue with
Deadpool guest-starring that didn't seem to have a point.

Absurd... I wish these guys would wise up and bring back real comics
on pulp newsprint paper in four colors, and get them back into the
hands of kids & other folks who can afford to snap a few up on a whim,
get back in the drug stores, 7-11s, groceries.

Ah, well, I find it hard to believe I'm the only one who misses this
on a fairly regular basis.

Wow, sounds so awful it might be work checking into...

Newsprint supposedly costs more than the current format. At least
that was what was said when DC tried its Wednesday's Comics experiment.

Ever since the recent Wolverine movie, Deadpool has become the new
Wolverine when it comes to marketing. You should probably expect him
to show up everywhere for little to no reason, at least until three
or four of his books go under.

Not sure where you get that from (not being a Japanese name expert), but you
can definitely get a double-i in Japanese (if that is what you meant) NI-I.

Middle names are definitely a non-Japanese approach. Perhaps his father is
Japanese with a Western mother. I here that since the war there are any
number of nationalities allowed to settle in the USA, though Bush did his
best. From my research there may even be Hispanic sounding last names in
America!

I agree with all of the comments against the new art displayed in ASM
612. What nauseated me is the plotline behind the pictures.

This is a return to the Pete Parker the Lamentable Loser, the guy whose
Kryptonite comes in the form of women. The chief battle ax of his life
is MJ, his Shrew, who pops up so he cannot forget what a creepy loser he
is, deep inside. He is best treated by one of those half-feline, half
human gals so common in comics, and she is only cheery if he keeps his
secret ID and all that depressing crud to himself.

We are back to the "when will Harry relapse" subplot for the 1,200th
time since 1969. Is revisiting that scenario the best upcoming feature
in the series in store for 2010?

It is preposterous that Joey Quesada's great "write-out" of MJ has
boiled down to a depressing saga of exes who do nothing FOR each other,
yet they are constantly running into each other for their mutual
dissatisfaction.

Americans usually throws out letters when alphabetizing Japanese name. For
example, it's Kato-u instead of Kato. There's a "wu" sound at the end that
is discarded and "Ka" is actually pronouced as "Ca," not hard "Ka."

Nimura would have meant "Two Villages" but not sure what it translates to
with two i's. In any case, this guy should not be drawing for living.

That's just bizarrely stupid. Anyone with even the slightest familiarity
with U.S. politics is aware that not only did Bush favor throwing the
borders wide open to anyone -- even those with an axe to grind against
the country and the resources to make said axe (for which he was
excoriated by his base) -- but he also married a woman with an "Hispanic
sounding last name" whose last name was Hispanic sounding because she was
the daughter of immigrant parents.

On topic, though, far as I can tell, the double-i sound in Japanese seems
generally to be rendered in English as "ihi" rather than "ii", possibly
because the latter occurs so infrequently that most speakers would be
thrown by it should they have to pronounce it. Not to say there aren't
folks who would choose the "ii" instead; after all, there are native
English speakers who think "fahrv" is spelled "Favre", a far(v?) more
egregious assault on the tongue.

Wow... I guess I'm just hopelessly out-of-touch with reality..!

It would be a matter of scale, presumably. Comics probably just don't
have the volume to make it cost effective.

And even if you could halve the cost and get them everywhere, it
doesn't mean enough new buyers will appear to make it work. And how
much loss would Marvel or DC have to eat in unsold product if they did
manage to get books back into every drug store and 7-11? That is
assuming that they could even get the shelf space in the first place,
as stores have only limited space and you'd be asking them to choose
between high priced magazines that sit in place for a month and low
price (and thus low profit) comics that take the same space, sit
couple of weeks, and may very well end up unsold anyway.

"excoriated" ? - Come on, you just made that up! :)

(From the Latin, I think it means to cut out someone's heart with an apple
peeler)

And how dare you call me bizarrely stupid! I am just as normally stupid as
everyone else in this newsgroup!
