The interum editor Ralph Macchio made me take out the following from Nova#3...

1- Splash page-- leave room for title, credits and indicia. Night. In a filthy,
Frank Miller style alley, Elektra stands surrounded by Nova, Namorita,
Speedball and Rage. Elektra looks defeated and she has the face of a Skrull!
Clearly, Elektra has just been defeated in some brawl and the New Warriors have
captured her. Nova is (as you'd expect) the central figure and he holds
Elektra by her collar. In the background, the police are pulling up. The
heroes are all in badass tough guy poses-- feeling confident. In a Scooby
Doo-esque moment, Elektra-Skrull says "Sure I disguised myself as Daredevil's
old girlfriend-- and I would have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for
you kids!"

2- The police take over-- hauling Elektra away, who's now wearing high-tech
handcuffs. An officer, who looks remarkably similar to Frank Miller, says "To
be perfectly frank-- we've been suspicious of her for quite some time-- the
real Elektra died some time ago." As the police cruiser drives off, Nova tries
to talk to Namorita but she gives him a cold shoulder. He's clearly interested
in repairing their relationship. She tells him to screw off and she grabs
Speedball by the arm and eases in close to him. Speedball as you might expect
is pleased as all hell that Namorita is giving him some attention and the two
walk off arm in arm while Nova stands there steaming mad.

*sigh.*

Heh... That's good! You could easily have thrown Howard the Duck in
there too, along with Jean Grey and Aunt May. The Skrull Retcon Krew.

Hmmm...not sure I want to get into this whole office/industry politics
crap. I guess I'm too partial to Dan Chichester's work to consider his
part in what you're hinting at as being scummy behaviour. (Apologies to
Frank Miller, Tony Isabella, Marv Wolfman and Dan if they're reading
this posting.)

You expect me to complain about this being pulled?!?

Sorry, Erik. I can't accomodate you here either. No disrespect intended,
but I *did* become a fan of these characters thanks to _New Warriors_
and I'd like to see what that book started built upon, not treated as
"in the way".

Surely you didn't expect them to let you get away with this. That would
almost be as bad as having Johnny Storm's wife of several years turn out
to be a Skrull. Oh, wait...

Aw man!! They took that out?! That would've been great. I doubt the
general public would've gotten it, but I take it Marvel wasn't about to
test the waters...a shame.

Well, it's nice to see Nova will be around for #3, at least... :)

Hehehe.....this was a joke, right? Oh well, it was a pretty interesting
idea though. And I agree with you (even though I'm also a D.G. Chichester
fan) on that: Elektra still is dead. But I know that Namorita wouldn't want
to grab ahold of Speedball no matter what the reason. Nice try though.

Damn.

(Heard Bobbie Chase was going to be the "permanent" editor. Do you think she'd
be amenable to the idea? You could always sneak it in later...)

My thought here was that it was just to bug Nova-- not that she had any
intention of doing anything with the guy once she was out of Rich's sight.

I don't think you understand the Elektra stuff. It has nothing to do
with continuity.

When Frank Miller killed off Elektra he had a 'gentlemens' agreement
with EIC Tom DeFalco that the character would stay dead.

Bob Harras ignored that agreement and decided to revive her, pissing
off Frank Miller quite a bit.

Out of friendship with Frank Miller, Erik was trying to 'undo' the
Elektra revival. That's it.

BTW: Marvel had planned to revert Kymera back to Namorita in New
Warriors. The title got cancelled before this could happen.

So it isn't hypocritical to revert the character as Marvel wanted to
do it anyways. They just found a creator that also wanted to do it.

Ruben Diaz is my new Nova editor-- New Warriors landed with Bobbie. I ended up
substituting somebody else for Elektra in the scene-- I think I'll likely leave
her alone in regard to Nova-- it would be more appropriate to address in
Wolverine but frankly, there's been so much undoing of events lately from the
Spider-Clone on down to Alicia Masters?Skrull and the Aunt May fiasco that I
can understand where this is coming from. I don't think this is WORTH a 5-part
extravaganza-- I thought the throwaway gag was all this crappy revival
deserved. Frank Miller killed her-- she shouldn't have been revived-- I think
it's too bad that it ever happened. I don't rreally even CARE if the stories
that brought her back were brilliant-- they were a slap in the face to Frank
and the work that he did.

No offense *intended* here, Erik -- but when one works in a shared
superhero universe, there's such a thing as *continuity* to abide by. You
want to retcon Elektra's resurrection? Fine, I can understand that. I
don't agree with it, but I can understand a creator wanting to do that.
However, what is not acceptable is just doing it in a way which flies in
the face of the continuity of the shared universe. Various stories (such
as ELEKTRA: ROOT OF EVIL) have clearly shown that the current Elektra
possesses the memories of the child Elektra. Just revealing the current
Elektra to be a Skrull impersonator would be inconsistent with this,
unless you also revealed that the Skrull had somehow used a
thought-transfer mechanism to copy Elektra's memories from the corpse or
whatever.

The concept of retconning Elektra's resurrection? I don't agree with it,
but it's perfectly within your rights to do that as a creator at Marvel.

The *execution* of retconning Elektra's resurrection? Shows a blatant
disregard for the internal continuity of a shared universe. Do it right,
or don't do it at all.

This coming from the guy that is trashing the Kymera storyline, because you
"like her the other way". Is this selective hypocracy..or just a general
trait?

Let's start the pool now - how long before Erik quits in disgust after
Diaz rewrites his scripts? I say 7 issues.

While I have been critical of editors in the past, I think this was a
good call. While I'm not a big fan of a ressurected Elektra, I also
don't want a fix that's worse than the problem. Macchio got burned on
the last one. Aunt May anyone? ---Alan
