As the above heading suggests, this auction list features books and other
materials by masters of the comic book, strip and animated cartoon art
forms, from Winsor McCay, Milton Caniff and Will Eisner to Harvey Kurtzman,
Robert Crumb and Garry Trudeau. The artists featured here have, among
them, created some of this centuryąs most enduring popular art, and Iąm
quite pleased to have the opportunity to share some of it with you in this
list of fine art books and periodicals from my personal collection.
Iąve divided the materials here into two sections: first, an auction list;
followed by a shorter list of items that are available on a first come
first served basis at set prices.
AUCTION RULES
Bidding on the items described in the auction closes on Saturday, February
14, 1998 at 1:00 pm pacific time. You may submit your bid(s) by mail or
e-mail through that time and date, but I will accept bids by phone only
during the final hour of the auction, (ie, from noon to 1:00 pm pacific
time on February 14.) There is no minimum amount you must bid on any
individual item, although I reserve the right to place a reserve price on
any item, and to remove any item from auction at any time. The suggested
bidding ranges are offered as a guide, and represent my own highly
subjective estimates of what these items might reasonably be expected to
fetch. Naturally, youąre free to bid higher or lower than my assessments.
Bids will be considered sealed when tendered, although I will, upon
request, advise you of the current high bid on any item on which youąre an
active bidder. Finally, as this list is only going out to a select group,
it is particularly important that you plan on honoring any and all bids
placed.
SET SALE ITEMS
Items in the set sale section will be sold on a first come, first served
basis. I will hold any set sale item for five working days upon request
via e-mail or telephone (e-mail requests are preferred, if possible.)
POSTAGE
All postage, freight and insurance costs will be the responsibility of the
purchaser. For the convenience of those of you in the Southern
California area, I can also make arrangements for you to pick-up your
items in person upon conclusion of the auction.
Thanks for your interest. May you find much to delight you in the
listings that follow.

Tex Avery
~~~~~~~
Tex Avery by Patrick Brion (French)/clothbound with dust jacket.
One of the most lavish animation books ever, this
must-be-seen-to-be-believed volume far outshines the deluxe Avery coffee
table book that was recently published in the U.S. Printed on glossy,
high-quality art stock throughout, a highlight of this amazing full-color
volume is certainly the complete Tex Avery filmography, illustrated with
color stills from all the classic Avery shorts. But the real eye-poppers
here are the tipped-in facsimile pages of original Tex Avery art which are
sprinkled liberally throughout the book: animation roughs, pencil layouts
and sequenced animation drawings--each printed on actual vellum, animation
board or tracing paper--with reproduction so authentic youąd swear you were
holding the original animation art in your hands. Anyone with the
slightest interest in Tex Avery or classic Hollywood studio animation will
want to have this book in their library. 173 pp.
Lot No.1--Suggested bidding range: $75.00-$150.00
Les Dessins de Tex Avery (Drawings by Tex Avery) by Patrick Brion (French)
edition.
The first and best illustrated biography of the legendary creator of Bugs
Bunny, Droopy, Red Hot Riding Hood, The Wolf and many, many more characters
>from the golden age of theatrical animation. Adamsonąs well-written and
profusely illustrated study covers the artistąs complete career, with an
emphasis on Averyąs classic work at Warnerąs and MGM. (Out of print since
the early 1970ąs, this is the original edition of a classic animation
book.) 238 pp.
Lot No.2A--Suggested bidding range: $10.00-$20.00
~~~~~~~~
Uncle Scrooge in Color by Carl Barks (Gladstone Publishers)/clothbound with
dust jacket; 1st edition.

who brought us the exquisite Carl Barks Library, serves as a fitting
addition to that monumental undertaking. This deluxe full-color volume

permanent collection, including the complete art and text of łDonald Duckąs
Christmas Carol,˛łDonald Duck, The Lemonade King,˛ łChristmas in
Shacktown,˛ as well as many, many extras, including beautiful reproductions
of Carląs complete blue pencil line-art from łDonald Duck, The Lemonade
King.˛
Lot No.3--Suggested bidding range: $150.00-$250.00
The Carl Barks Library Cover Set Portfolio: Set VIII (Another Rainbow)
Uncut color covers in illustrated envelope. (Out of print.)
A complete set of uncut covers from the initial release of Another
Rainbowąs Carl Barks Library, Set VIII. An immediate sell-out when they
were published, this set of uncut covers from the first Carl Barks Library
set was printed in far smaller numbers than subsequent cover sets from the
series, making this particular set the most difficult to find. 24
individual four-color pages, printed on oversized glossy stock (approx
9˛x14˛ each) which reprint every cover from Walt Disneyąs Comics and
Stories from 1948-54 in beautiful full color. Prints in mint condition;
specially illustrated envelope is very fine.
Lot No.4--Suggested bidding range: $20.00-$50.00.
łTil Death Do Us Part˛ Postcard Sized Lithograph (Miniature Continuous Tone
Lithograph) by Carl Barks (Another Rainbow)
When Another Rainbow initiated their award-winning Carl Barks Disney
lithograph series in the early 1980ąs, the company would have their
lithographer run off a number of postcard-sized miniatures of their
full-size lithographs to be given away as samples to preferred clients.
And although theyąre only about the size of a postcard, these small-scale
continuous tone lithographs are printed using the exact same process as
their far more pricey full-sized cousins, and are actually quite stunnning
works of art in their own right. The card offered here is the third and
last such sample to be made by the company: łTil Death Do Us Part,˛ which
features a beautiful Barks oil portrait of Uncle Scrooge.
Lot No.5--Suggested bidding range: $5.00-$20.00
Not For Sale: The Carl Barks Checklist by Mark Worden (Mark Worden); B&W
w/full color cardstock cover
Privately published in an edition of 300, this 67 page booklet from the
late 1970ąs comprises one of the earliest efforts to compile a
comprehensive checklist to the Disney comic book work of Carl Barks,

reference, and a most unusual collectible. As the title indicates, it was
never offered for sale, merely distributed by fan word of mouth, making it
