If I am not mistaken, the Renaissance festival depicted in the latest
Sandman is the actual one held in Shakopee, Minnesota. My wife works there
every summer and we both agree that many of the pictures, especially the
splash page where Hob first enters, are dead ringers down to the signs on
food row being in the proper order. Hey, where else do they sell Pabst Blue
Ribbon Beer?!
What also leads me to this conclusion is that Niel lives in Menomonie,
Wisconsin which is under two hours to Shakopee (I live in between), and his
publishing house, Deamhaven Books is also my comic store in Minneapolis,MN
and is only 20 minutes from the Renfest.
I have to say I agree with Hob, or should I say Neil ;), in that if I
hear "Hazzah! Twenty Pounds for the King!" one more time, I'll probably
kill someone. BTW, this is also the same Renfest that they often make fun
of on Mystery Science Theatre 3000, another illustrious Minnesota
production. I guess those festies just can't cut a break!

You know, when I saw the subject line for this post, I thought it had
something to do with Kricfalusi & Co...

Wait. Wouldn't Delirium make an excellent Stimpy? (and Despair as Ren)...

"Del! You EEEdiot! Stop whatever that is right now!"

No?

Not something to be proud of, but hey.

Yes, the Renaissance Festival depicted in Sandman 73 is the Minnesota
Renaissance Festival. Neil and others, including Michael Zulli,
visited the festival early in this years run to take pictures and look
around-- get details right.

There are a couple of cameo appearances in the issue. Writer and
musician Steven Brust (a friend of Gaiman's) works at the MN Renfest
in the band Morrigan. Steve appears on page 11, the man in The Hat,
second and third panels.

The Flash Girls (Emma Bull and Lorraine Garland) also appear, on page
22, 2nd panel from teh bottom, they're the two on the right. Lorraine
and Emma, respectively. They perform music at the festival. Of
course, Neil also writes songs for them, and they have released two
acclaimed albums. Visit http://www.player.org/pub/flash/flash.html
and http://www.apocalypse.org/pub/signal-to-noise/ for more
information about the Flash Girls. If you lack web access, email me

They did an outstanding job -- as someone originally from Minnesota, I've
been to the Renaissance Festival a number of times, and while it's usually
a bit drier at the MN Renfest, you can identify and recognize all of the
buildings (including the one that Hob passes out in).
