Valor was a much better name than Mon-El, in my opinion...and that was
actually a decent book too...mostly written by Mark Waid and Kurt
Busiek.

I preferred a lot of the updated Legion names from the first reboot
too...Livewire, Apparition, Chameleon, etc., all seem like
improvements and I was sorry to see them go.

A name that always kind of annoyed me because he isn't an El or even
Kryptonian...at least the updated version M'onel (or something like
that) actually had some meaning behind it...it was supposed to be the
Martian word for "Wanderer"...it fit with the whole Valor schtick
(since he didn't want anyone to know he was Valor once he made it to
the 30th Century).

There are a lot of good books that don't last long...quality doesn't
always translate into sales...if you've really been reading comics for
so long, you should know that...in Valor's case, it started out as
crap and, by the time Waid and Busiek took over, the damage was done
and there was no saving it...and, of course, the Legion was in the
midst of rebooting so it was pretty much doomed no matter what.

Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl were never changed (and I'm glad that they
weren't for nostalgia's sake)...but, when they all have names like
that, it's hard to take them the slightest bit
seriously...particularly once they are adults...I loved the reboot
Legion (or, rather, the Abnett/Lanning Legion from later in that
run)...I miss it very much.

Strictly speaking, of course, the original name was Lightning *Boy*...

It got swept up in the first major Legion reboot (not counting the
Superboy-wipe mini-boot in the early issues of the TMK Legion book)
during the Zero Hour event. With the insanely convoluted history/time-
loop suddenly thrust upon the character as a result of ZH (seriously, if
you can, check the last few issues of VALOR; makes the Hawks' history
read like Dick & Jane in comparison), the book had nowhere to go and
simply closed up shop. (Indeed, if I have my LSH history straight, Lar
Gand wouldn't reappear in the DCU for several years following the reboot,
so radioactive was his old backstory.)

The quality of the book had nothing to do with it not making its "0"
issue; the event that caused "0" issues in the first place was
responsible for making it impossible for the VALOR book (and character)
to do so as well.
