I got this in my order last week. Harvey Pekar wrote most of it. Each
chapter deals with a different luminary of the Beat generation. Good
stuff so far.

Wow, I'm getting 3, that's amazing. The rest goes to my wife.
Something tells me I ought to cut shipping down to once a month, the
boxes are going to start getting mighty empty.

What the heck is happening? I've noticed that the pull lists for
everyone are getting smaller and smaller?
Informally, can anyone tell me if it is crossover fatigue or economic in
nature?
I personally haven't been writing much to the groups because I haven't
been buying many comics. My budget is basically the same but I can't
find anything I want to read.
What about everyone else?

Because comics are getting crappier and crappier. It has nothing to do
with money, I'm just sick of spending money on things that I end up
hating, which means that not only have I stopped buying DC, I've now
stopped buying Marvel.
> Informally, can anyone tell me if it is crossover fatigue or economic in

Back before Marvel did Civil War, I decided I'd never again read another
of their mega-crossover monstrosities and I haven't. Every time they
came up with one, any book that it involved... I stopped reading. Most
of them, I simply never cared to pick up again afterwards. Marvel's
crossover mania is responsible for my losing all interest in titles like
Avengers, Iron Man, Spider-man and Fantastic Four, all titles that I
have read for decades, but now... couldn't care less about.

That's exactly it. I'd love to be able to find comics I wanted to read,
I just can't.

Seems to be going that way.

For me it's not crossover fatigue. It's simply that there's less I want
to read.
Michael
Just less good readable stuff out there at the moment - it's really quite
sad :-(
Amen. I'd love to read a good mega-event-x-over -- but the caveat is that
it be =good=. I haven't enjoyed so much as I've =endured= the "summer
blockbusters" from both majors since... geez, INFINITE CRISIS?
I like line-wide continuity. And I like stories that are clearly written
and drawn, and where the commission of great acts of evil are not
rewarded on a cosmic level. If I have to choose, though, I choose the
latter over the former. So, great swaths of both Big Two companies'
product is off my radar entirely.
I shouldn't =have= to choose. I didn't when Shooter and Thomas and
Wolfman and Wein and Michelinie and the like were the giants of the
industry and there's no reason, especially with the talent that the
industry is capable of attracting, that any less should be expected
today.
Until Didio and Quesada grasp this, though, and make an effort to not so
much be "edgy" as "interesting" again -- and, hey, hire a line-wide story
editor to read through all scripts for a given month to make sure they
play nice with one another before they see print -- they seem content to
watch attrition erode their sales margins between mega-events.
Ah, well... I have a handful of titles that haven't been ruined -- though
that list gets smaller and smaller every month -- and I have Alex Ross'
PROJECT SUPERPOWERS to remind me that an interconnected comic line =can=
be done right.

The problem is, they don't care, especially Quesada. He's a big fanboy
trying to live his fantasies and he's largely ruined Marvel comics in
doing so. Marvel used to employ these people called editors who
actually knew the continuity and the characters and weren't afraid to
tell writers no. Today, writers get to do whatever the hell they want,
no matter how ridiculous it is, and nobody bats an eye.
There was a time when these mega-events were rare, only coming about
every couple of years. Then came the summer blockbuster. Now, that's
all they do are mega-events.
No thanks.

No, they emphatically do NOT get to do whatever the hell they want.
You think all those writers WANT to write mega-crossovers? You think
it was the WRITER who had Spider-Man make a deal with Mephisto that
undid decades of continuity?
Nope. That's all editorial meddling, not anything the writers wanted.

Usually the mega-crossovers are orchestrated from high up, I'm talking
about writers who don't know much about the character they're writing
and just go out in left field and play with themselves. The disaster
with Mary Jane was pure Quesada, I guess he couldn't handle Spidey
getting laid when he can't.
But wasn't Quesada the editor? I think the vast majority of problems
in both DC and Marvel books are created by micro-management by
editors. They should let the creaors create, and they should set up a
climate in which the creators can do their best work.
Quesada is EIC and he's made it clear for a long, long time that he
hates Spider-man being married.
Writers and editors need to be partners in writing good stories.
Writers need to bring their A-game to the table and editors need to make
sure that the story fits into already-existing continuity. If you can't
have both sides, it turns out to be a disaster.
Having spent years reading writers such as Bendis and whoever, it might be
what writers wanted, but it could be what some writer wanted. (The TMK
LSH, anyone?)
