So, I haven't watched SV since the first couple of seasons, but I
caught the latest ep, with Metallo, which led to a few questions:
1) Clark: What's this about turning his back on Humanity and training
with Jor-El?? And he's dressing like Neo, now?! Maybe it's because I
just tuned in, but "The Blur" sounds way too much like "The Flash" to
me...I saw a quick shot of Clark in glasses in the opening credits,
why doesn't he wear them all the time now? At this point, he may as
well wear glasses when he becomes *Superman*! BTW, what was that thing
he threw at Metallo, to disrupt his body?
2) So Cloe and Lois are living together...But Cloe is basically
Oracle, now? Incidentally, how is Cloe shaping up in the comics, now?
Who is the "Jimmy" they mentioned as buying that tower? Olson?
3) Where's Lex and who is Tess? There are other Kryptonians on Earth?
From Kandor?? I'm guessing it's not a shrunken city...
4) Where are Lana and Kara? And Ma Kent? And that was Dr. Emil
Hamilton, wasn't it?
5) Is Perry White at the Daily Planet yet?
Dex
Lex is supposidly dead and Tess runs Lexcorp.
Lana and Kara have been written out in contrived stupid ways.
Clark is wearing a similar outfit of Conner Kent the current Superboy.
Black t-shirt with S logo and used to wear a leather coat/jacket.
Clark's thoughts were that he was partially responsible for Jimmy's
death because he wouldn't kill Doomsday... because he was too close to
the people involved.
So he decided to try to reach his potential as a Kryptonian by breaking
ties with the people he cared about, especially after Lois'
disappearance. But when she came back, he could no longer stay away.

Yep, but she isn't shaping up. And yeah, Jimmy bought the watchtower as
a place for he and Chloe to live before he died.
> 3) Where's Lex and who is Tess? There are other Kryptonians on Earth?
> From Kandor?? I'm guessing it's not a shrunken city...
Lex is dead. Whether he's really just in hiding or not remains to be
seen. Tess is Tess Mercer, aka Mercy, Lex's right hand girl. When he
was pronounced dead, she assumed control of Lex's business interests.
The Kryptonians currently on Earth are genetically modified clones of
Kryptonians who were in a military regiment led by Zod on Kandor.
Jor-El modified the DNA of the clones so that they would not have powers
under a yellow sun.
> 4) Where are Lana and Kara? And Ma Kent? And that was Dr. Emil
> Hamilton, wasn't it?
Lana is the Kryptonite girl. She wore some sort of suit that bonded
with her and allowed her to absorb radiation, giving her powers. Lex
forced her to absorb a ton of Kryptonite radiation, so now she can't be
anywhere near Clark without him falling ill.
Ma Kent is a US Senator who spends most of her time in DC.
And yeah, that's Hamilton.
> 5) Is Perry White at the Daily Planet yet?
If he is, he isn't who everyone reports to.

It's supposed to be "conflict": Jor-El wants him to not be so human but
he still is. They also had to have a scene explaining why he still can't
fly, so it's because he won't embrace being Kryptonian.
The long coat looks sort of like a cape when you see him standing on a
rooftop, so it gives them tantalizing shots to put in the preview.
Maybe it's because I
> just tuned in, but "The Blur" sounds way too much like "The Flash" to

Without flying, that's the best superpower they've got. Also solves the
problem of people recognizing him.
I saw a quick shot of Clark in glasses in the opening credits,
> why doesn't he wear them all the time now? At this point, he may as

The glasses shot in the opening is from an episode a year ago or so. I
forget why he was wearing them. We just had a bit where he told Lois he
was getting nearsighted, so maybe the plan is to wear them more and more
until people get used to it, and then they won't recognize him without
them. Makes as much sense as the original idea that they wouldn't
recognize him without them.
BTW, what was that thing
> he threw at Metallo, to disrupt his body?
A sheet of lead, after he softened the inside of it with heat vision to
make it stick.

Haven't been following the comics.
>

Lex is missing, the way soap stars sometimes are, because Michael
Rosenbaum wanted out.
There are other Kryptonians on Earth?
> From Kandor?? I'm guessing it's not a shrunken city...
Yes, but without powers. I still haven't figured that out either. As
with many other things from the comics, they use the name but apply it
to something else.
>
> 4) Where are Lana and Kara? And Ma Kent? And that was Dr. Emil

Lana left town, for the same reason as Lex. Kara just wasn't doing much
for the plot. Ma Kent got elected to the senate. (Apparently Clark is
running the entire farm himself, in between crimefighting and working at
the Planet. You'd think he'd get an apartment in town.)
>
> 5) Is Perry White at the Daily Planet yet?
Nope. Probably won't be until maybe the series finale. Michael McKean
would be too expensive.
Hope I can answer your questions . . .
> So, I haven't watched SV since the first couple of seasons, but I

That was a rerun from earlier in the season. Things have changed since
then.
> 1) Clark: What's this about turning his back on Humanity and training

Clark runs at super-speed for his good deeds so all that is seen is a blur.
(It used to be red and blue blur because that's what he was wearing but he
changed to the "Neo" outfit at the beginning of this season.)
After the death of Henry James Olsen (see below), Clark decided to go
through the training Jor-El wanted, leaving behind his humanity. He changed
his mind due to what was going on at the beginning of the season with Lois.
Also, the scene of Clark wearing glasses is from an episode from season six
with an alternate time line. He just told Lois he needs glasses in a recent
episode but hadn't started wearing them on a regular basis yet.
> 2) So Cloe and Lois are living together...But Cloe is basically
> Oracle, now? Incidentally, how is Cloe shaping up in the comics, now?
Chloe will not be appearing in the comics at this time. Apparently there
was some legal problem.
> Who is the "Jimmy" they mentioned as buying that tower? Olson?
Jimmy is Henry James Olsen. He was married to Chloe before he was killed
last season. Supposedly, he is the older brother of the Jimmy Olsen that
will work with Lois and Clark at the Planet.
> 3) Where's Lex and who is Tess? There are other Kryptonians on Earth?
> From Kandor?? I'm guessing it's not a shrunken city...
Lex was written out when Michael Rosenbaum didn't resign after his contract
expired. He is supposed to be dead.
Tess Mercer is the CEO of Lexcorp with Lex's absence. She has a past with
Oliver Green but we haven't been told how she rose to prominance in Lexcorp.
We haven't been told the full story about the Kryptonians. Speculation is
they are clones of Kandorian soldiers but we don't know.
> 4) Where are Lana and Kara? And Ma Kent? And that was Dr. Emil
> Hamilton, wasn't it?
Lana received superpowers but was contaminated with kryptonite (Kind of like
the comic's Kryptonite Man) . She can't be near Clark anymore and is
traveling around the world.
Kara is off planet searching for Kandor, a rumored city of Krypton
survivors.
Ma Kent is now a US senator. Pa Kent was elected but died before taking
office and she took his place.
And, yes, that is Emil Hamilton.
>
> 5) Is Perry White at the Daily Planet yet?
No, the Planet is currently a division of Lexcorp. There is talk that they
might be bring in Perry White for another episode or two (he appeared on the
show years ago).

I thought it was some form of EMP
As for the glasses, IIRC, he only unleashed them at the end of the last
new episode.
And if the Blur keeps leaving the "S" shield as his calling card, you'd
think someone on Smallville-Earth would come up with an S-based name
pretty soon.
> 3) Where's Lex and who is Tess? There are other Kryptonians on Earth?

Those are clones of Kryptonians from 20 years before Krypton exploded
wit Jor-El having Blue Kryptonited the samples to remove their powers.

Though the actor quitting didn't stop the show continuing to promote
Lex's presence as a behind-the-scenes manipulator, by every few
episodes using a body double for Rosenbaum who was watching events
while recovering from having the Fortress of Solitude fall on him.

Kara might not have been doing anything for the plot, but to be
blunt the writers weren't doing anything for the plot either.
Rosenbaum finished out his contract and decided he wanted to try other
things. (Plus he doesn't have to shave his head now.)

Oh, is that how that works?^_^
So, Clark leaves the S-Shield as his calling card? What does he think
it means, if not "Superman"?
Incidentally, if I want to get caught up on the whole JLA-Supergirl-
Brainiac storylines, which seasons should I rent?

That is how it works, actually...although Jonathan was actually
elected as a state senator, Martha took over when he died, and then
she got appointed to the US Senate by the governor when one of Kansas'
Senators was killed and exposed as corrupt.
>So, Clark leaves the S-Shield as his calling card? What does he think

It's his Kryptonian family crest...which is not new to the Superman
mythos.
>Incidentally, if I want to get caught up on the whole JLA-Supergirl-

Well, if you're that interested, you might as well watch it all...the
JLA characters were introduced sporadically from seasons 4-6 (though
more continue to be introduced) and they were first assembled as a
team in mid season 6...Supergirl was basically around for all of
season 7 and one episode in season 8...and Brainiac appeared on and
off from seasons 5-8 in various forms.

That's what the show did. I think it is based on Sonny Bono's widow going
to Congress after his death but, IIRC, she had to be elected.
>So, Clark leaves the S-Shield as his calling card? What does he think
>it means, if not "Superman"?
In Smallville continuity, the S-shield is a look-a-like for the Kryptonian
symbol for air. It became the El family crest.
>Incidentally, if I want to get caught up on the whole JLA-Supergirl-
>Brainiac storylines, which seasons should I rent?
Bart / Impulse / Flash was introduced in season 4. Arthur / Aquaman and
Victor / Cyborg were introduced in season 5. But it wasn't until season 6
that Green Arrow was introduced and he put the team together (the 11th
episode of that season).
Supergirl and Brainiac were introduced in season 7. They were involved
throughout the entire season and written out in 8.

That's how it often works...when an elected official dies (or at least
Senators and Representatives), the spouse is given the option to take
over the seat for the rest of the term...if they say no or there is no
spouse, the governor appoints someone to finish out the
term...sometimes there is a special election but not always...at least
that's how it works on the federal level...it may be different on the
state level in certain states.

Brainiac actually showed up back in Season 5 and has appeared on and
off since then...at least until the Legion episode in the middle of
Season 8...but that doesn't mean we've seen the last of him.
Yeah, I mistakenly put Brainiac down as debuting in 7. The ship that became
Brainiac showed up in the finale of season 4 and took human form in season
5.
The Legion episode was the last time we've seen Brainiac but, as you said,
he could always return.
FWIW, in Bono's case he'd been in office for a few years. In Pa Kent's
case he died the night he was elected. Dunno if that has anything to do
with anything, but I thought it should be mnetioned. :)
Michael
Yeah, I'm not sure about a case like that...being that he never even
had the chance to take his seat, Martha may not have been given the
choice to take over...there may have been a special election or it may
have just gone to his opponent (in this case, Lex)...it's hard to say,
especially if Kansas has its own rules about its state legislature.

But doncha think that Martha Kent would show up on the farm from time
to time? Since she went to the state capitol I don't think anyone as
even nodded at her continued existence. The show might as well have a
funeral for her and get that story element out of the way.
--
Lilith
According to Wikipedia Martha was offered Johnathan's position. Later,
when U.S. Senator Burke was killed she was offered his position in
Washington, D.C. But the legislature isn't in session year 'round.
You'd think she'd show up every once in a while.
--
Lilith
She's been mentioned here and there (most recently when Lois said she
called her about Clark's walkabout at the beginning of this
season)...and the show really doesn't spend much time on the farm
anymore so there is nothing to say she doesn't visit off screen...that
said, the producers have said they have an idea to bring her back if
and when they can make it happen.
You'd think Clark would have moved *away* from the farm. The best
wrap up would have probably have been to have Clark move to Metropolis
and Martha either sell or lease the farm to someone else. With the
farm a non-issue, the writers could bit the bullet and written
Smallville as a location out of the show, rather than spending
several years with the show effectively moved to Metropolis but
still bouncing back to the farm for a scene or two every episode.
"Chloe, we need to meet. Instead of coming two blocks to work, let's
go back to my mom's barn in another city!"
Heck, you'd think people would get a bit suspicious about that farm
anyway. It was bad enough when Pa Kent and his teenage son ran it
seemingly by themselves (though there was mention of hired help who
were never seen,) but having it maintained by a solo kid who has a
full time job in another city?
>>> That's what the show did. I think it is based on Sonny Bono's widow

...The precedent goes back further than Sonny Bozo. When Hubert
Humphrey died, his widow finished his term, and there were at least a
dozen other examples prior to that, going back to the beginning of
women having the right to vote and/or hold office.

>Yeah, I'm not sure about a case like that...
...Actually, most states have election rules in place to cover such a
circumstance - most recent case I can recall that could apply was when
astronaut Jack Swigert died of colorectal cancer just a couple of
weeks after he was elected to the US HoR - in that either a special
election is held to choose a successor, or the Govenor of the state in
question appoints a successor. In every state, however, those rules
usually prohibit an appointed successor from being the primary
opponent of the deceased, so as to prevent the loser from having the
winner offed so he could take over.

Right...the loser should off him earlier to win the election in the
first place.

...Depends on what crops Clark is growing on that farm. If it's
cannabis, nobody will give a frack how they're harvested so long as
the crops are bumper ones.
But Ma Kent got appointed to the State Legislature that Pa had been
elected to, something like a half hour before his fatal heart seizure.
Then some stuff happens off screen and the Governor appointed Ma to the
US Senate. Now I call that a bumper crop of good luck. Ma goes from
worry that the family farm is only a few hundred bucks away from
bankruptcy to being the flipping U.S. Senator from Kansas!
That sorta stuff just does not naturally happen.
Let's be honest. She has gone Washington DC. Ma Kent could not find Main
Street, Smallville, on a bet. She is a regular on K Street and hires
office help to do favors for the dumb farts at home, There is no
principle that will stand between Ma Kent and her fortune!
At the same time, with Clark's speed, how few minutes would it take
him to run to Washington, DC to visit his dear old mom? Why go to
Chloe for morale support when you have a mother a hop, skip and a tall
building away.

Lionel Luthor mught've pulled a few strings behind the scenes.

She probably does, just not during any of the episodes we've seen.
