Jim Lee swears he's getting off his well-paid ass in 2010 to catch up on
the piles of ASBAR scripts in his inbox.
But he's also supposed to be doing a monthly JLA book in 2010.
I'd be shocked if he found the time to do even -half- of =one= of those
assignments, let alone hit them both on time, but he seems to think
otherwise....

...Supposedly there's a betting pool one of the fan journalists set up
to predict what issue will be the first one he flakes out on. My bet
is on the fourth issue, because he'll have at least three in the can
before he fucks up. Personally, if I ran DC, I'd make it clear to Lee
and every one of these so-called "hot artists" that they either meet
their deadlines, or hope their hype can soften the blow as I have
security toss them out on their butts.

Lee is part of management. Supposedly one of the reasons he's always
late on the art is the make him do all sorts of management stuff. I
expect the deal he made when he sold Wildstorm means he can never be
fired.
And then there's the fact that he's a very popular artist...delays or
no, his stuff sells well and that's all they care about...I doubt
anyone would consider firing him over it these days...especially when
there are all those other artists who just seem to get slower and
slower as their popularity rises...and they don't have the management
excuse.

...Those I know at DC have confirmed that's what the internal word is
around the DC offices. He can be bought out, but not fired unless he
does something *really* stupid, like sexually harasses someone at
work, or gets caught stealing a desk or something like that. But then
again, you know me. If I took over DC tomorrow, there'd be some
serious housecleaning around that joint, and contract or no Lee would
be explained what a deadline is, and what happens if he misses just
one without a *good* reason. If more editors would keep their creators
in line with regards to deadlines, the industry would be better off
for it.
They need to put him on assignments that only get released when the
arc is finished. Sort of like how Spider-Man is being run with short
arcs with crew changes when the story finished.
