LEGION: SECRET ORIGIN 6
I must be getting old. I was right about the villain, and how he got there.
I've read too many comics for so long they are becoming predictable. At
least I liked this book.
Anyway, the villainously possessed Mycroft takes Brande to Brande's own home
to kill him, only to be stopped by Brande's second secret bodyguard
Chameleon Boy, who then has to defeat a a blaster wielding robot of Mycroft,
then Mycroft himself. At this point the possessing entity, later revealed
to be the Time Trapper, emerges to menace Cham. This version has the
ability to force Cham back to his normal form. (I don't recall that ability
before.) Meanwhile Brainiac 5 realizes that there could be a temporal
component to the wormhole, and realizes he could close it by blowing up his
tamaged Time Bubble inside the wormhole. Brainy plans to operate the Bubble
himself saying his force field belt should protect him. Ultra Boy thinks
it's too small a chance of survival, and almost offers to operate it with
his invulnerability, but Phantom GIrl takes charge to operate it herself,
since it is her only known way home, and the explosion can't hurt her in her
phantom form. She goes and blows up the wormhole. Side effect of this is
pulling the Time Trapper back to the end of time, and ending all the
assassination attempts on Brande. Phantom Girl survives (obviously) and
ends up staying with the Legion ('it's more interesting.') Mycroft and
Brande publically kiss and make up, and the rocket ship headquarters is
dedicated. There's a list of possible future members to consider, which
they will do once the Time Bubble is rebuilt.
Only real downside I had with this issue was the total absence of Star Boy.
They introduced him as a new member last issue, but he wasn't even in the
background of any page this issue. Perhaps he got hurt in the last issue
and I didn't notice it. By same token, that kind of mirrors his early
career as published. He appeared in one of the first 20 Legion appearances,
well before the Adventure run began, then was almost totally absent until
Dream Girl was introduced several years (real time) later. He just never
was very lucky, was he?
Over in Previews, looks like I was on the mark again. In addition to LLost
10 and LSH 10, a hardcover collection of the STAR TREK/LSH series is
announced. (I thought they would wait until Fall for that.) They mention
LLost in the writeup for Teen Titans 10, but it does not indicate if any
Legionnaires will be seen there. Also scheduled to come out August 1 is
Superman: Action Comics Vol. 1 - Superman and the Men of Steel hardcover,
reprinting the first 8 issues of the new version. If you recall, the Legion
founders appear in two issues that I panned, more for the art than the
story. I'm not covinced the collection is worth 25 dollars. Maybe next
year when a trade paperback comes out, like the collections of most of the
rest of the new 52 line.
Still waiting for the Archives.
Until next time,
