Where did the idea that the LNHQ sub-basements go infinitely deep and
are full of Weird Stuff come from? That's always been one of my
favorite LNH tropes. I've read about the first year's worth of LNH
stories now and they haven't broached that issue yet.

Doing a googles group search (which is a horrible search engine -- I
know) the Saint's Case of the Clueless Mystery seems to be the oldest
mention... although it's possible that Hubert came up with the idea in
Tales of the LNH..

Well, Hubert had Panta sleeping in "the" basement so we didn't have
sub basements at the time and I know I didn't have the idea. I
suspect it was probably Drizzt but I can't say what story.

Confirmed! I found this posted in September, 1994: "[T]here is also a
subbasement with HoloDecStations and a
sub-subbasement which, if nothing else, contains Continuity Champ's
old stuff." So there was a reference to a single sub basement in an
old pre-September 1994 Continuity Champ story. Then in August, 1997,
there was a reference to there being 665 sub basements. That was Tom
Russell. I don't know if that number is considered canon though.

I found the same quote from June, 1993. Then in September, 1993 Zen
referred to a "sub-sub-sub-basement" in Insanity Watch #1. That mayu
have been the first mention of a sub-sub-sub-basement.

Oh, Dave may technically be correct because I just found the line he
was referring to in The Case of the Clueless Mystery. It was reposted
in July, 1993 so I don't know when it was originally written. It
mentioned "one of the sub-basements" implying there was more than one.

Anyway, I believe Drizzt's mention of "a sub basement" predates Saints
mention of "sub basements".

Found it! Drizzt's Blaze of Glory, also reposted in July, 1993. It
looks like we were reposting stuff after the move to RACC.

"We box up his stuff and put it in the sub-sub-sub basement" it says.

Hmmmmm. Sensible line of descent, then.

Thanks! It would be neat to go through the old stories and put
together some kind of reference document about the portrayal of the
LNHQ and how it's changed over the years and gradually acquired all
these anomalous properties. Unfortunately I wasn't looking out for
that when I was reading them.
