Hi,
I'm looking for a gift for my Mom- a coffee table-type book on the history of
painting. It has to have examples from all the greats, up to the current time
(or at least close) and descriptions of each. I don't know which one is best.
All help will be appreciated greatly.

If you have a used one, I may be interested.

Thanks.

I recommend History of Art by H.W. Janson, published by Abrams.

Try Gardner's "Art Through the Ages". Better selection of pics.

The classic Art History Survey books have been mentioned except Hartt.
If you're interested in a used book, these should be readily available
from a college book store. These books contain sculpture, architecture
and painting. You must look at them to determine which is best. It
depends on which periods you are most interested in.
