You want Ralph Mayer, "The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques",
ideally in the most recent edition, but do not spurn earlier editions as a
starting point if, for instance, your public library has them.
This is a standard work, updated often to reflect changes in the complex world
of artist's methods and materials, and it will enable you fully to understand
the chemical aspects of making a painting and thereby create a work which is
conservatorially sound as well as satisfying from the standpoint of content. A
copy of Mayer will serve you well for years.
