Tolkien spoofs, satires and parodies

|
| |
Does posting a Tolkien parody by definition constitute disrespect for the Master and his works? My thesis is, not necessarily. In the preface of (for me) the funniest and best Tolkien spoof, _Bored of the Rings_ the authors profess respect for Tolkien and his works despite their humorous mangling of the story.... more »

OT: Battlestar Alcoholica
|

After having seen a lot of episodes of "Battlestar Galactica", I can't help but marvel that the fleet has survived for so long. I can only conlcude that the Cylons never really meant to destroy it. It's fighting personnel take every chance to drink booze (which they seem to have infinite supplies of)... more »

Thoughts on the Book of Lost Tales

I have just finished reading _The Book of Lost Tales_ 1 and 2 (BoLT). Nothing special about that, but this is, I think, the first time I have sat down and really read it from end to end. Then I found this: [link] A violin with sharp teeth? I wonder if that could be an oblique reference to this passage in _The Two Towers_:... more »

Book newsgroups dying?
|
| |
For several years I've kept in touch with people who share similar literary interests by means of Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists. Now many ISPs are withdrawing their news service (it does require rather a lot of server space) and so traffic in the newsgroups has dropped off a lot, and I've lost contact... more »
