I believe that between them PJ and Ralph Bakshi have demonstrated that
it is possible to make a success film version of the LotR if the movie
maker is sufficiently sensitive to the material. Unfortunately neither
Jackson nor Bakshi is. Case in point: a much more faithful and
sensitive move, as far as it goes, would be Bakshi's script and PJ's
settings, costumes and actors. Bakshi has the words right (mostly
Tolkien's with no jarring 'modernism') and Jackson has the look (as
long as he leaves the special effect goons at home). Of course Bakshi
did insert a couple of sillinesses, 'Aruman' being the most
noticeable.

Andy Serkis' Gollum is excellent, but RB's wasn't so bad. And PJ's
Theoden is simply awful. (I prefer RB's who is not good.)

Now we need someone to put together a decent RotK. I have no faith in
PJ what-so-ever.

I *had* a lot of faith in PJ as far as editing the story. I still do
visually--100%. But I think he needs to explain to all of us what his
reasoning was for that ridiculous scene in Osgiliath.

I had no problems with that scene, the only one that let me down was the
scene in Theodens hall.
