A collection of early 20th Century histories, travel guides,
autobiographies, genealogies, and Beatrix Potter.

For Sale:

1. Baedeker, Karl. PARIS AND ENVIRONS with ROUTES FROM LONDON TO PARIS.
Handbook for Travellers. Baedeker, Leipzig, 1907. Sixteenth Revised
Edition. With 14 coloured maps (many folding) and 38 Plans.
16mo, liv, 470 pp. including Index, plus 48 pp. of Place Listings. Red
cloth with gilt on cover and spine, all edges marbled, two cloth place
markers. Front endpapers list other books, rear endpapers show a map of
France. A near fine copy with a slight crease on cover, a bit of bumping
on edges. The gilt is very bright. The DUST JACKET is darkened and
chipped but is very good. An excellent copy. (NF/VG). US$ 75.00.

2. Cook, Thomas & Son. THE TRAVELLER'S HANDBOOK FOR NORTHERN ITALY.
Simkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent, London, 1923. First edition. With maps
and plans (mostly coloured and folding). 16mo, viii, 520 pp. including
Index and ads. Maroon cloth with gilt on cover and spine, all edges
speckled. Spine slightly darkened, corners creased on two internal pages
with six lines underlined in pencil, else fine. (NF). US$50.00.

3. Crisp, Frederick Arthur, editor. VISITATION OF ENGLAND AND WALES.
Private (Grove Park Press), (England), 1906. Vol. 6 NOTES. No. 108 of
500 copies, signed by the editior. Pedigrees of landed families, wills,
deeds, etc. Illustrated with woodcuts of arms and seals, and
bookplates, and signatures of the various families. (viii), 235 pp.
including large Index of names. Quarto in half-vellum and grey cloth,
gilt on spine, teg, other edges untrimmed. Heavy offsetting on the two,
front and rear, free endpapers, corners bumped, vellum spotted and
soiled, and torn (1/4-inch) at the foot of the spine. Previous owners'
(both men of the cloth) bookplates inside front cover. The binding is
sound, the interior is clean. (VG+). US$ 100.00.

4. Crisp, Frederick Arthur, editor. VISITATION OF ENGLAND AND WALES.
Private (Grove Park Press), (England), 1914. Vol. 18. No. 63 of 500
copies, signed by the editor. Pedigrees of landed families. Illustrated
with plates of arms, bookplates, and miniatures, and signatures of the
various families. (xii), 235 pp. (including large Index of names),
lxxii pp (Additions and Corrections). Quarto in half-vellum and grey
cloth, gilt on spine, teg, other edges untrimmed. A previous owner's
bookplate inside front cover. The book is very clean, inside and out,
and sound. (NF). US$ 100.00.

5. Dickens, Charles. THE LIFE OF OUR LORD. Musson, Toronto, 1934.
Written during the Years 1846-1849 By Charles Dickens for His Children
And Now First Published 1934. First edition. Illustrated with
reproductions of woodcuts designed by Albrecht Durer, and of the
engravings of Gustave Dore. Dark brown pebbled boards with gilt on cover
and spine. 151 pp. Light wear at the spine ends, a small spot of wear
on front cover as well as a faintly visible (depending on how the book
is held to the light) water stain (?) on front cover, and a small
booksellers label ffep. Still, a near fine copy. (NF). US$ 75.00.

6. Hodges, Leigh Mitchell. THE GREAT OPTIMIST AND OTHER ESSAYS. Dodge,
New York, (1903). Hand-coloured: 35 pp. in maroon suede covers with gilt
on the front cover, silvery-green endpapers. Each of the ten chapter
heads has a hand-coloured gold and pastel letter decoration. Very clean.
(NF). US$ 45.00.

7. Potter, Beatrix. THE TALE OF MR. TOD. Frederick Warne, London,
1912. First edition (Linder) with the error in the dedication. 24mo,
94 pp.
Fifteen coloured prints including frontis, forty-one black & white line
drawings including title page vignette. Original gray boards printed in
green with pictorial coloured fox illustration pasted on front cover,
illustrated endpapers. Slight wear (but no tears) head and tail of
spine, spine somewhat darkened, slight darkening around edges of rear
cover, moderate spine lean. A near fine copy BUT for the six (of 41)
neatly coloured-in line drawings, one of them being the title page
vignette. (VG+). US$ 200.00.

8. Roberts, Field-Marshall Lord, of Kandahar. FORTY-ONE YEARS IN
INDIA, from Subaltern to Commander-in-Chief. Macmillan, London, 1900.
Thirty-second edition (first was in 1897). In two volumes, Vol. 1 ONLY.
With portraits and maps (three folding), complete. 511 pp. including
Appendix. Dark blue cloth, gilt crest and blind-stamped decorations on
cover, gilt on spine. top edge dusty and slight wear to corners and
spine ends, still near fine. Vol. 1 only. (NF). US$ 25.00.

9. Roosevelt, Theodore. OLIVER CROMWELL. Constable, Westminster,
1900. First English edition. Thirty-seven illustrations. 8vo, 260 pp.
including Index, in brown cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine,
gilt medallion on cover, teg, uncut. A fine copy but for moderate spine
fade. Scarcer than the American edition. (NF). US$ 150.00.
