IN THE MUSEUMS
**************
"Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years: Sedections from the
John F. Kennedy Library and Museum"
Hamish Bowles
Our price: $40.00 | You save: $10.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0821227459/wendysmall
First stop at the Metropolitan Museum should be the Jackie show. The
mini-controversy over who really designed those trim suits and
slender gowns (Oleg Cassini or Givenchy?) doesn't detract at all
from the realization that Jacqueline Kennedy set a standard for
style and entertaining that remains unmatched.
"Vermeer and the Delft School"
Walter Liedtke
Our price: $60.00 | You save: $15.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0300088485/wendysmall
The crowds have thinned out over at the Met's Vermeer and Delft
exhibit, so it's easier than ever to see how Vermeer improved upon
the style of 17th-century Dutch painting. But hurry: the show ends
Memorial weekend.
"William Blake"
Robin Hamlyn
Our price: $60.00 | You save: $15.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0810957108/wendysmall
The William Blake show is still on at the Met too. The poet's
haunting images of powerful, accursed, and spectral figures may be
an acquired taste, but the show is the most complete gathering of
his works ever, so it's a must-see, especially for anyone with a
literary bent.
"Behind Closed Doors: The Art of Hans Bellmer (The Discovery Series)"
Therese Lichtenstein
Our price: $36.00 | You save: $9.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0520209842/wendysmall
The Hans Bellmer exhibit at the midtown Manhattan branch of the
International Center for Photography is guaranteed to disturb. A
surrealist in the 1930s, Bellmer challenged the Nazi ideals of
perfect bodies with his photographs of disfigured doll parts in
strange settings.
"Dear Friends: American Photographs of Men Together, 1840-1918"
David Deitcher
Our price: $28.00 | You save: $7.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0810957124/wendysmall
A sweet show of historic daguerreotypes and early postcards of men
friends is also on display at ICP. The poses, many of Civil War
soldiers and other military men, are refreshingly affectionate, a
pointed comment on present-day concerns about gays in the military.
"American Folk"
Gerald W.R. Ward
Our price: $32.00 | You save: $8.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0878465952/rwendysmall
"American Folk" shows off the Boston Museum of Fine Arts' exquisite
collection of paintings, quilts, and utilitarian objects made by
untrained artists from the late 18th to the early 20th century.
Painted chests and carved animals--including the finest duck decoys
any hunter has ever seen--make a wonderful introduction to the
American vernacular.
"Foodchain: Encounters Between Mates, Predators, and Prey"
Catherine Chalmers
Our price: $23.96 | You save: $5.99
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0893818852/wendysmall
MASS MoCA, the rehabilitated mill turned arts center in the town of
North Adams in western Massachusetts, is absolutely worth the
detour. The cavernous galleries make the contemporary art look
spectacular. Catherine Chalmers's sequence of oversized color
photographs in "Food Chain," for example, has never looked better.
Tobacco hornworm caterpillars eat their way out of a dripping tomato
only to be nibbled by a praying mantis, who becomes lunch for a
hungry frog with a shining dab of spittle on his sated lips. Yum.
"Ancient Sichuan: Treasures from a Lost Civilization"
Robert Bagley
Our price: $48.00 | You save: $12.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0691088519/wendysmall
Back on the left coast, in Seattle, the groundbreaking "Ancient
Sichuan" has just opened. The big bronze statues look like nothing
else that's ever come out of China, and nothing is known about the
mysterious civilization that created the objects. The show goes to
the Met later this year.
