Carteles: the following are paper posters originally advertising
particular bullfighting performances.
C-14. This cartel (20"x40") is for a corrida at the Plaza de Toros de
Madrid the 4th of October 1970 with Jose Mata as the "unico espada".
The image is from an oil painting of El Cordobes executing an ayudado
behind his back with a large, black bull. He is in green & gold traje.
It is a dramatic, arresting image with bull & matador facing the
viewer, signed & dated in the painting J. Crosestrems (?) '65. It
was printed by Ortega of Valencia. It has a horizontal crease across
the center, is lightly rubbed, & has tack holes & tape at the
corners, somewhere between good & very good condition. It is nice
and bright & would be lovely when framed. &30.00.
C-15. This cartel (20"x40") is for the San Isidro Feria 1983. It lists
all the cartels for the 3 weeks, including matadors Espartaco, El
Soro, Armillita, Paco Ojeda, & Nimen~o II. The image is from an oil
painting
of a rejoneador in traje corte on a white horse, having just places
the banderillas in a large, black bull, horse & bull charging toward
the
viewer. It is signed in the painting J. Crosestrems. It was printed by
Ortega of Valencia. Overall it is in very good condition, bright,
with the only flaws being a small, closed tear halfway along the right
edge & tack holes in the corners. $25.00.
C-16. This cartel (20"x40") is for the Fiestas de la Virgen y San
Roque in the Plaza de Toros Alfaro, 1990. It lists all the cartels for
the 4 days including matadors El Soro, Finito de Cordoba, Julio
Aparicio, & Sergio Sanchez, It has been boldly inscribed with a narrow
"felt" pen by matador Sergio Sanchez. The image is from an oil
painting by Ballestar of a blond matador in white & gold traje
executing an ayudado with a large black bull. The only flaw is a
horizontal fold across the center. It is very bright & otherwise
near fine condition. $25.00.
C-17. This cartel (21"x39") advertises 3 corridas in the Plaza de
Toros de Barcelona in August, 1970. The matadors include "El Viti",
Linares", "El Paquiro" & the Portuguese rejoneador Jose Maldonado
Cortes. The image is from an oil painting by Ballestar of a paso por
alto of a matador in violet & gold traje, the vigorous, black bull
seeming to charge almost out of the painting into the viewer, a
dramatic image. Except for three horizontal folds it is bright and
in near fine condition. $30.00.
C-18. This cartel (22"x39") advertises 5 corridas in Vic (Vich). It is
undated as to year though dated 1989 in the painting. I believe it is
from 1990. The matadors include Manili, Nimen~o II, & Roberto
Dominguez. The image is from a painting by H. DiRosa, strikingly bold
and expressionistic, dominated by a black bull with banderillas
hooking a loose cape. The lettering is large, bright blue & red, and
rather free form. The printed information is in French and the cartel
is certainly of a clear French style. It is a quite beautiful
composition, frankly of a much more artistic feel than most cartels.
It has several small, closed tears along the edges but is otherwise
bright and overall in very good condition. $20.00.
C-19. This cartel (20"x39") is for the San Isidro Feria, 1987. It
lists all the cartels for the 3 weeks including matadors David
Silveti, "Espartico", Curro Vazquez, "El Soro", and the young "Litri"
as a
novillero. The image is from a painting by Calderon Jacome and is in
a decidely cubist style of a matador in lavender & gold traje & black
bull in an aydado. It is colorful and of high artistic merit. It has
several small, closed tears along the edges but is otherwise bright
and overall in very good condition. $20.00.
Cardboard carteles (posters):
These carteles are printed on light cardboard, like old fashioned
"shirt board" or poster board. Most are multi-colored, but where one
or two colors dominate that is noted. All advertise corridas in
Tijuana in the 1960's and 1970's. Most are bilingual, as befits la
frontera and all are printed in Mexico. They are all extremely
bright and generally in very good condition. Exceptions and
individual flaws are noted. Horizontal dimensions are listed first.
CC13. Downtown Bullring Tijuana Mexico Bullfights. Sept. 21st 1969.
22"x15". "Specially big fierce" Las Huertas Bulls for Curro Rivera,
Cucho Solorzano, & Arturo Ruiz Loredo. The three, small images by R.
Basso take up the left 1/3 of the cartel. They are of toros bravos
in the field, a toro & torero with banderillas, & the moment before
the final charge. The dominant colors are the red of the lettering &
the light blue of the background. There is a small tear in the
margin & 3 staple holes. $30.00.
CC16. El Toreo de Tijuana. May 30, 1976. 23"x17". "Deadly brave
bulls" of Tequisquiapan for Manuel Capetillo, Manolo Arruza, &
Carlos Serrano "El Voluntario." The image is rather more
impressionistic than most. A matador in traje of blue & gold holds
sword & muleta in his right hand as the bull emerges from the
background, curling around him from back to front. It gives a rather
sinister feel & the matador seems quite young. The image takes up
more than half the cartel from the left running behind red
lettering. The dominant colors are deep browns & the red of
lettering & muleta. $30.00
CC19. Plaza Monumental in Tijuana. July 30, 1967. 12"x16". Edith
Evans, Antonio del Olivar "El Estudiante" & "Chito Mun~oz. The image
of a natural in 4 colors is by R. Basso. The poster is white with red
& blue lettering. There is a small brown stain in the lower right
corner & a bit of creasing in the same corner but is quite nice
looking & bright nonetheless. $25.00.
Photographs:
PH 9. This is a lot of two 5"x7" black & white photographs of Eloy
working with the muleta & a very large bull. The passes, one to the
right, the other to the left, are ayudados, both shot from Eloy's
rear. They are beautiful, crisp images and deserve to be framed
together. I do not know the photographer or location, but believe
them to have been taken in Tijuana. They are in fine condition.
$35.00 (for the pair).
